Hi - I am new to this site and not from the perspective of exploring mines as a whole, but one in particular. I have found out that my ancestors were quarrymen and worked the Box mine in Wiltshire. I have noticed that there are a few photos of that particular mine. There is one in particular that was done by my great great grandfather. What a find. I would love to be able to see it.

Good work to all those who are exploring and recording.

Other than route-finding in the 50 km or so of passage in Box, this is a fairly easy place to get around.

The 'mine' (actually an underground quarry) is a bat hibernation site so it's better to visit in the summer than in the winter - perhaps we ought to sort out an AditNow trip there for sometime next year.

There is of course the Darpklaces Website which is pretty much dedicated to Box Freestone Mine , Get yourself registered on there, Forum members often do trips weekly. There are a lot of members of this website who are also members

Got around it by altering the view/zoom size thingy. I'll remember the refresh
option, thanks. 🙂

Thanks for the info guys, I like the idea of it being a sanctuary for bats. I know it was used in the WW's to store ammunition as well, as well as being a place to grow mushrooms.

The idea of the trip sounds like a good one - I nearly got the opportunity of going down there when I visited Box a while back.

Thanks also for the link to the other site.

Amazing how much information is kept. I think it's wonderful and it helps me imagine what it must have been like for my ancestors working down there.

Cheers

If you have any more info re your relatives that might prove helpful, e.g. when they worked, also where, as prior to amalgamation as the Bath & Portland Stone Company (in 1880s IIRC), Box was a number of seperate mines.... Find the name of the part they worked, might prove possible to figure out which part of present-day Box (e.g northern part officially known as Clift Quarry).

Might well find some graffiti from them-happened with guy I took down there last year-found loads from his relatives who worked circa 1900-1912...including their address! 😮 He was a v happy chappie 😉

BTW Bats not too much of an issue in Box-plenty of space to leave them in their slumber as you walk past...some big ones there on Sunday, biggest I've seen in Box anyway
