Hey,

Does anyone know is the Ayle Colliery in Cumbria is still there or has all machinery been removed, and access impossible?

Best Regards,
Tonto:guns:

Clarghyll closed a few years ago and has been mostly cleared with the adit buried - very sad.

Cheers

Crikey, I'm sure this information was imparted but I can't immediately call it to mind. My impression was that they were expecting a break in production soon to move into a new area.

I believe it's just family members?

Apart from the opening shots of Killhope, Clarghyll and Ayle that film, misleadingly titled on youtube, is entirely about Tows Bank and some of the workforce. It was made for German TV by Tim Moores (seen in the white overalls) who a few months previously had himself been working there - operating the hauler at the drift mouth.

Can't immediately recall his name but the person who leased and operated Ayle, in the 1990's, is or was a forum member.
Regards, John...

I have not been back to Cumbria for a while, happy to here that it is back running, it is quite rare that it happens that a pit closes and then opens again. Excellent news

Ayle west was still operating in August 2020 with coal stocks being marketed locally.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
