Hi,
My mate is a Cumbrian and comes from Whitehaven for his sins. I asked him about this pit and here's his response. There's also a lot about it on Google.

Hi Rich,

Lowca is a former pit village about 3 miles north of Whitehaven; kids from Lowca came to Whitehaven Grammar School. When I was at that school and doing local history in the 1960’s there were 2 pits at Lowca called Harrington No.10 and No.11 although Harrington is a suburb of Workington and is about 3 miles North of Lowca. Both pits closed in the late 1960’s, around 1968, and tradesmen from them came to work at Fischer and Porter where I worked so I knew a few of them. Between 1965 and 1972 most of the Cumbrian pits were closed, only Haigh Pit at Whitehaven remained and that closed around 1984. There’s now nothing to show that Lowca was a pit village, even the spoil heap has been grassed over and now looks like a natural hill. You can see Lowca from the road between Whitehaven and Workington and it still isn’t a pretty place.

Cheers

Neil
