On holiday with the Mrs up in Kirkoswald (not far from Nenthead)

We headed off for a wander around Killhope lead mine,

And stopped in Alston for a bit to eat and a wander around the shops ...Wooot wooot lol,
Had a mooch in a second hand book shop and bought a couple of Deputy's manuals/deputy's handbook/mine gasses pamphlet ....

Browsing through them over a cold beer back at the caravan,The Deputy's manuals are embossed with "Ayle colliery company limited"

Some research on here later over the afore mentioned cold beer

Also found a youtube clip of the last days there ...shame the commentry is in German

Apart from the opening shots most of this was shot at Tows Bank. Remember well when this film was made - director was our surface haulage driver!

Many thanks for the extra info folks ...interesting stuff,
After consulting the maps while we were in the area,
We took a drive over to Ayle on the way to Nenthead ...Sadly the large gate at the entrance to Ayle colliery was firmly closed so little chance of any pictures,Sadly bout the same up at the nearby Clarghyll colliery site ...along with a handful of folks from the nearby static caravan.
