Is there anyone familiar with this quarry that can shed some light on this square hole?

'Old Maps' site has several 1:2500 maps with a fair bit detail, if you could identify the position it may be annotated in the same manner as the crushers.
May even be a crusher pit?

I don't really know the area, but judging by the photos the sandstone (I assume) sits in handy size layers between shales/mudstones etc.
I would speculate that the rock has been extracted for architectural use where large blocks of sandstone are required. Extracting rock by cutting such a hole might be very efficient if the rock is being removed by a derrick-crane

Jinx I simply used the link above following a quick trawl of goodgle, because it had a few nice pictures of derrick-cranes. Now I have had time to have a really poke about what appears to be an excellent website and it even has a section devoted to Lee Quarry:
