I have two of the normal size Stenlight batteries and tomorrow I am going to Smallcleugh to help take timber in. I have read the battery spec about duration times but I was wondering how the batteries perform in real life?

I have only ever used the Sten for a maximium of 4 hours at a time, but I guess that tomorrow I will be underground for much longer than that, at a guess say 8 hours but I am not sure and I was wondering if two fully charged batteries will see me through the day. I do have a back up light anyway but I would be curious how long anyone has managed to get out of their Sten batteries.

By the way, I tend to have mine on the third highest setting most of the time.

What do you call normal, the little u'ns or the GBFO big u'ns?

either way a fully charged one should last you all day (12 hours +)

Hi Wormster

I mean the little 'uns. I dont remember without looking what capacity they are but they are the ones you get when you buy the lamp and charger and battery kit. Not the double size ones. If that makes any sense!

Yup it does make sense,

I did the CRTT last big bash with Si's "Demo" sten,

that had the "small" battery, did the trip (5-6 hours ish as I recall)

the sten could have done the trip forwards and sdrawkcab with burn time to spare. 😮

Incidentally, if you have more that one battery, make sure you alternate the use of the them so that both are regularly used. If you have one as a 'spare' and it's never used, the battery condition can deteriorate and life will be shortened.

This isn't peculiar to Sten batteries, by the way - it's the same with anything similar.

No worries mate! I do have two but I only get out about ionce or at the most twice a month. Never really sure if these batteries should be stored half charged though, or if its okay to store them fully charged.

Anyway, we'll see tomorrow how long they last. I keep meaning to do a timed test at home but never get round to it!
