Hi, I urgently need any information of the grid references or OS location of the Carmarthen United (Trelech)/Santa Clara Lead Mine - Carmarthenshire.
Also copy of any Abandoned Mine Survey Reports done - any archive info. at all really.
Any explores who have photos of the inside of the mine would be fan-tas-tic.

Thanks guys. 😉

May I ask why the urgency?

The site is well recorded in Hall's 'Metal Mines of southern Wales' and Foster-Smith's 'Metal mines of the south Wales area', including NGRs and summaries of the workings (but no plans). Peter Claughton's mining history website contains useful information: google 'Peter Claughton' and 'Trelech'.

It can readily be located by comparing the historic OS 1:10,560 maps on the National Library of Scotland website with current OS maps (1:25,000 available for free on Bing maps), from which you can derive an accurate NGR.

Haven't been underground there. IIRC there is a large tip down the track below the farm, but with surprisingly little mineralisation present - a bit of chalcopyrite and galena.

Hi there, another soul with the same question, why the urgency !
Carmarthen united is reasonably well documented in various places throughout the internet.
You have to understand that in the most the guys an gall's on this site are not just mine explorers we are in our own way historians and protectors and we try our best to preserve what exists and to protect what remains within our scope.
If you were perhaps a little more forthcoming in your questions and your reasons, certain people may be more willing to help.

Thanks for reply - urgency due to planning application for 2 x 54 wind turbines just up the hill from the mine entrance - put in by Cwm Farm and Parcybedw Farm. I live in a cottage (marked on OS map - Blaen Einon). We found out about the application on Sunday and only have until next Thursday 26th Feb to put our objections in. We are trying to find evidence that would enable us to use the following objection:

GDC15 - CONTAMINATED LAND AND PREVIOUSLY DEVELOPED LAND: Planning Policy Wales 2002 para. 2.7.1 – 2.7.2
Planning Policy Wales 2002 para. 13.5.1

To ensure that new development is not permitted without a full understanding of the risks involved, including those associated with the previous land use, mine and landfill gas emissions, subsidence, rock falls or landslips.

Hence the urgency and my request.

No, not a consultant ... very worry person trying hard to get evidence to object to two wind turbine applications close to my home. 😞

I found this site while searching for information and as you say people here know about mines. I am seeking information/maps of the underground workings for the Trelech Lead mine in order to establish how far they extend. 2 x wind turbine proposals close to the mine have been submitted for planning permission - hence my seeking any evidence that shows the site as unsafe.

Hmm. Well it's not the rudest or most impolite of requests that this website has received in the past or is likely to receive in the future and it would be a shame to frighten off future contributors because they are wary of the reception they might receive.

If anybody has information regarding the mine that they wish to share with this lady then please feel free to do so. Likewise, anybody who knows little or nothing of the area in question or holds information they would prefer to keep to themselves needn't worry too much about it. 🙂

I have read Peter's info online and contacted Peter through his Exeter Uni connections, but as he is now an Associate not a full time - he's been difficult to track down. Still awaiting a reply ... hopefully.

Thanks - I have found the info from Hall's book from Carmarthenshire Ref. Library. I'll take a look at the other suggestions you give. 🙂

I used to live in Crymych and know the area quite well. It is riddled with mines working. I am sure any wind turbines will sink slowly in the ground.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
