Very good point Mr Burgess, although when interesting films like the Bargain Men of Swaledale are presented in this way, ie no attribution and the logos etc edited out, then that becomes something of a relevant issue.

It's also the case that some old photos that have been put up on the site as if they belong to the contributor, have, almost certainly, been downloaded from the internet and should, at the very least, be credited to the museum etc that has curated them, even the murky world of the internet usually manages that, luckily not that many people do that and it could have been done in complete innocence. :flowers: :flowers:

Well here's one everyone can enjoy without feeling guilty or breaching copyright. Vertex Access developed a prototype shaft inspection system along similar lines - this model used guide wires and a custom winch to prevent excessive rotation and speed variation, but even then it's not perfect - though at 60 metres depth it's not that bad either.

It shot video straight down, and rotated automatically to take stills images, so a panorama of the entire shaft could be 'unwrapped' later. It also had gas monitors installed, and thankfully prevented an abseil into a gas-filled shaft on one occasion while looking for a dead cow. We found it, jammed in the shaft at a constriction about 35m down.

I helped them set this video shoot up, and a few others besides - it's at Whalf (Hillocks) Mine in Monyash. We even got permission in writing from the National Trust, who generally like this sort of thing - if they're asked nicely. The first few seconds are a speeded-up view to the bottom, and then it's real-time back up to the top, so plenty of time to study the geology and mining modifications, including the abandoned 'double shaft' in the top half. And it's not full of water either.

I also got to practice my animal communication skills whilst it was ascending, coordinating a re-shoot of the 'Atom Heart Mother' album cover ;)

This is a single cable suspended unit with a rotatable head containing the cameras that stays pointing in the same direction irrespective of how the suspension cable twists. Looking through the binocular headset gives a stereo image of what the cameras can see. It's very impressive.

It can be hung from a 'blondin' type arrangement so that it can be set up over a running-in shaft without having to approach close to the shaft itself.

Yeah, they do keep an eye on things like that. Almost certain they'll also have profiles on here, 28DL, etc.

Last time Mr S. Twigg (alias AME and retrogamerVX? I think) was asked about permission (Yorkshire TV in that case), he used a questionable word formulation to suggest it had been given, by saying that the copyright holder had been "approached". Not exactly crystal clear.

I would just like to take this opportunity to point out that Mr S. Twigg is in absolutely no way linked to myself Mr C Twigg.

You wouldn't believe the number of people who think we're related.

Congratulations that you now got it over the 1000 subscribers so you can 'monetizing' other people work, evil twin.

I think you probably mean "Congratulations on getting to 1k subscribers, now the lawyers will know you've made money from your copyright breaches, and have a far better chance of winning, as you're not doing it for 'fun' "

Incidentally, if you look at this shaft video, you'll see that the 'obscured' area on the UKAME video nicely lines up with the 'un-obscured' section on this one ...

Sorry Chris,

I should have put "no relation" etc as per Private Eye's wording to make that clear. :flowers:
