Hi. Having been both to Wales and abroad in last few weeks it was saddening to see some treasured pubs, guesthouses and other businesses struggling. I wonder if it would be useful to post some recommendations on here for places to stay in and eat at.

Perhaps list of places by area (near mines but not naming mines) that are still open for trade and you would hate to see go bust due to low footfall?

We are living in unprecedented times.

My take is that in the short term the only thing we need to concentrate on is getting through the current crisis. Unfortunately there is going to be a lot of economic collateral damage. I strongly suspect that my job is going to go to the wall in the not too distant future; so be it I am resigned to that. We can deal with the economic fall out both on personal and societal levels once we have beaten C 18. Things are going to get a lot harder before it gets better. However ignoring government advice on issues such as (for example) social distancing and the avoidance of non essential journeys is going to make getting back to normality a whole lot harder.

I wasn't looking for a venue to hold an over 70s disco, or anything like that.

Some people will still need to travel at some point. There is also advice that certain folk don't go home if there's illness in the house and recommendation not to stay with the elderly. Hotels in places are offering rooms to keyworkers.

The government are talking of loans (?) to small businesses and the easing of restrictions sometime, as they don't want to kill business. My concern is that once they do, the number of customers will be limited which is why I was thinking of helping those valued ones.

I think the idea has some merit for once things start returning to normal, as Rick says, just going on a jolly at the moment seems to be against the mainstream advice.

Last weekend I did stay in Betwsy at a B&B I'd be happy to recommend in future. It's probably going to be my last trip for a while 😢

Responsible local eating places are busy adapting to the situation by enhancing their otherwise fine hygiene procedures, suggesting limits to group numbers, rearranging their rooms to segregate and offering takeaways.

They deserve support if only to have somewhere other than McDonald’s to visit once the social isolation induced cabin fever has set in.

Yes I got the point immediately and I agree. Shame I got shot down for agreeing with you. I certainly wasn't suggesting that everyone goes out down the pub on the lash with their grannies in tow :lol:

These places need promoting at all times and like you say bear them in mind when they do start opening up again; our "Community Pub" will need all the help it can get :thumbup:

I wasn't meaning you in my earlier comment Sinker, sorry if I offended you. It was the OP I was referring to. I thought Tamarmole worded his reply very well.

Perhaps the OP could have worded it slightly better. However, it is still current advice not to travel unnecessarily etc, etc.

I like to try and strike a sensible balance between the real world at one end of the spectrum, total hysterics at the other end of the spectrum....with sensible advice somewhere in the middle.

By coincidence we did the walk up from near there up past the copper mines to M***d and beyond just a few weeks ago. We intended to return that way when (and if) it got less windy.

This week I went over to North Wales to do the Outdoor Centre mine safety inspections. We decided on Monday that we would go ahead with minimal staffing just to get it done. Each day the news got worse and by Thursday (the last day) the whole outdoor industry had almost completely shut down. I saw Go Below Miles on my way home and he fears ruin.
In such areas where tourism is key, there is going to be a lot of pain. Sadly there is not much most of us can do about it.

I just managed to escape from Wales as the drawbridge went up!

Too true.

Today I locked down and mothballed the George & Charlotte at Morwellham. This was my last duty as mine manager and I am now gainfully unemployed. Sad but pretty inevitable.
