Just been told that the rope in prouds sump has been cut, 5m or so down so the end is dangling just out of sight.

speedy death for anyone that tries dropping it and doesn't see the end coming

spineless, gutless, cowardly arseholes whoever is responsible

Has this happened recently? As the same thing was done about a year ago and nearly ended in someone abbing off the end.....

In a way I am hoping its old news, but someone passed it on to me earlier. not one to cry wolf over, and even if it is old news that has somehow resurfaced via email, worth checking before anyone drops it.

I would suggest removing it altogether if it proves to be correct, or at the very least stick a big fat knot on the rope end

I had an email too & like Duracell Bunny ust discounted it as old news.

If its not, I'm presuming that whoever found it didn't just leave it unchanged!

Not really much need for a fixed rope there anyway is there?

I received a warning about the cut rope in Proud's Sump from a couple of NMRS members who spent this last weekend at the mines. The email arrived yesterday and I posted on the Caving Forum (I wasn't a member of this site until moments ago).

I wasn't aware the rope had previously been cut and the email I received does indicate it was something that had only recently happened.

It's depressing to know somebody could be so utterly stupid.

I have never been able to see the logic in why this sort of thing is actually carried out.
It is not just mindless vandalism, since has already been posted it could lead to a nasty accident.
I have resorted, in explanation, of these incidents to the words of one of my former pupils. A highly intelligent young man who often carried out vandalism in the Academy. His retort was it is fun at the time!

In my opinion, a pretty sick explanation..

Dear friends, this is old news that came up in discussion last weekend. This is a past incident, can't quite put an exact date on it now....

I will shortly be putting some updated information about bolts and hangers on the NMCS website. We did some preparation for NAMHO 2015 last week.

Keep calm, Captain Mannering. This is nearly as interesting as old helmets.

I kinda hoped it was old news, but still worth passing on just in case. better safe than sorry. would hate for a cry wolf scenario to end in tragedy

And breathe... I'm glad this is old news that somehow resurfaced with a 2014 date on it! I've let the person who informed me know.

If its old news lets delete this topic before it leads to confusion.
As I've said in the past ,all the bolts and insitu ropes could help out in a crisis and provide an alternative route out for a party so should be left alone.
You should never trust an insitu rope , always check it first for all the usual damage that may occur and of course length - teaching my grandma to suck eggs hear!
If you get caught interfering with insitu "safety" gear .........
you have been warned

I've amended the title to hopefully avoid confusion.

Does leaving a rope in make it safer though? It certainly sanitises the mine I think and removes the need for self-sufficiency...

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
