Does anyone have any recommendations for something to seal the ends of cut SRT rope whilst underground ? A cigarette lighter would do at a push, but is there something better that is not too expensive ?

See if you can get hold of one of the "windproof" lighters - I refer to mine as the pocket jet engine 😉 They have piezo ignition and a flame on lock, and they don't blow out easily. I don't think they're all that expensive, I paid about a tenner for mine 10 years ago and it's still going strong.

With apologies for promoting something I sell... this is what I use: http://www.abcstore.co.uk/Silva/Helios-Lighter/p-148-463/

Not a bad bit of kit and somewhat hotter than a disposable lighter. Sometimes one needs to carry spare lighter fuel around if there's a lot to be sealed, but usually it's got the capacity to cope.

I'd also tend to use heat-shrink over the end just as a further precaution, but it's probably over-kill and I usually end up setting fire to it 😞

Vanoord's beastie is similar to the one I've got, but a bit posher. Mine is the original type with a cap on a chain, and a clear plastic fuel reservoir. As I said in my original post, they're pretty tough although I have seen some cheap copies kicking around. Phil at Caving Supplies had some for a while but he's stopped stocking them as they were a bit problematic.

I've got one of those Silva lighters like Vanoord posted, very good piece of kit, and rugged too
my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by
