be-leave it or not i have an very early edition of the Manchester A to Z that actually still shows a lot of "disused mines" which are missing on more modern maps.....useless yes but not to a person researching old mines i guess interest is in the eye of the beholder even old landranger and road maps might have clues to earlier activities, my philosophy is dont throw it just buy another bookcase.

if its a hole explore it...

As an equally pointless aside, I found my childhood copy of the 1981 edition of the Puffin Junior World Atlas in my nephew & niece's bookcase yesterday.

On the page for the USA it had a photograph of a rundown slum and the text, "the USA is a rich country but even so there are very many poor people there."

On the next page - the Soviet Union - there was a photograph of a rocket on its launch pad with the words, "the Soviet people embrace technology in their everyday lives" and another picture of a line of gleaming Moskvitch cars coming of the production line with a suitably proud comment.

The obvious bias seemed a bit much, particularly with the benefit of hindsight! :offtopic:

Way off topic, all shoot Roy!

George Monbiot is a strange commodity in that he and I are light years apart on most things but I find him nail on the head on a lot of other stuff.
What he writes I find worth reading whether I agree or not and am a regular visitor to his website. He wrote a very interesting article an how he nearly died of hypothermia and his life was saved by a knowledgeable passer by.

Of course the thing that both he and I might really have in common is that both of us are stark raving mad
