A few peeps over on ME were talking about this a week or two ago. It seems blocked, but this may have fallen through since then. I seem to remember that it was nearer 600ft (200 fathoms or so). Still, that's a hefty coil of rope.

"Julie Dowton, from the St Cleer and District Commoners' Association, said it could cost "several thousand pounds" to cap the hole."

Bit of an under-estimate? I'd have thought making something like that safe (by a councils standards) would be a bit more pricey?

Well the last shaft we capped at Alderley cost us near enough £600 and that was a 4ft x 5 ft shaft that we were digging i think there estimate of a few thousand is way off. Knowing the council they will prob fill it first costing many thousands in rubble etc before they even start capping

Providing that the collar is not coning I would suggest that the best option is simply to fence the shaft

given that are are various other shafts collapsing in the area that have been gated/fenced off next to the main walking routes why so much fuss over a shaft on a lesser explored part of the moor?
