Called round at my old mans tonight ....
He has dug out some of his old piccies (from his days at Plas Tan y Bwylch in the 80's)

It was himself that got me interested in mine exploring as a youngster .

Not sure if any of these will be of interest to anyone (Quality is scannertastic and it's taking me time to go through them and upload them ) but hey ho ...

Dorethea engine house ....(with the PTB's landrover)

I like the pics.

Can they be uploaded to AditNow? The long term reliability of Photobucket is questionable in my opinion!

I can't get to these at all - Photobucket throws an exception ?

Is the fanhouse (Guibal?) at Croesor still there? Don't recall seeing it.

The Croesor fan house was just to the left of the entracne - was dismantled/taken down very many years ago (apparantly) with the intention of re-erecting it at Gloddfa Ganol (not my idea!) but never happened, nor do I know what happened to the bits.

EDIT: OK had to go a different way to see them - my work firewall blocks photobucket!

The Penrhyn balance is Sebastopol - still existing.
Nice shot of the Croesor fanhouse.

Thanks

Those are some fantastic images Mriceman.

I've tweaked the links so they work - I think there was some URL obfuscation in them - I replaced ¤t with &current and they work.

If you can upload them here it would be great, and much appreciated by all those with an interest in these sort of archive photos. AditNow's long term aim is to be a permanent (as long as I draw breath anyway ;)) repositry for mine exploration and mining history related images so the more people who can contribute the better.

http://www.aditnow.co.uk/album/Croesor-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album/  and from there click one of the links in the red-bordered block on the right hand side called 'Quick Upload Links'.

Nice photos. As has been said above shows how much we have lost!

BTW the two photos of Blondins are at Penyrorsedd, not Dorothea.

You might like to take a look at the archive Edd - some pictures of places now well under water. This is another of the Fan House.

Was the fan much use?
Guibal fanhouses were relatively commonplace in the Cleveland ironstone mines but they worked flat, regular seams where air flow could easily be manipulated. Its hard to see how that could be used with any particular efficiency in the big slate quarries with their huge chambers and the large number of ways they could be inter-connected.

A number of slate mines had "air doors". In some cases these were simply wooden frames with polythene sheet nailed to it across disused tunnels. It was a wooden door if the tunnel was still in use. I don't know about the arrangements at Croesor specifically.

I believe the reason for the installation at Croesor was the installation underground of the Robey engine working the underground incline and then pumping. The Engine was installed at the top of the incline under a vertical shaft to the surface, then moved to the foot of the shaft on A floor. In both cases, with the natural draughting arrangements of the mine, smoke was a problem. The fan was probably intended to remove the smoke one way or the other! The main adit was wide enough for an air channel along one side, we thought separated from the traffic way by a wooden partition.

Smaller air driven (and electrical) fans were used elsewhere to remove the gases from blasting wher the levels were too long to vent naturally or quickly.

Cheers

Links corrected again.

Mriceman - you're not doing anything wrong here! It's the way Photobucket includes ¤t in the web address.

It turns out &curren is the character code for ¤ so when it's parsed as HTML &current turns into ¤t so the link doesn't work!!

The joy of web development

Bad form of Photobucket to include a string in their image URLs that gets garbled when it's displayed on a web page...

I think Chris is probably right about photobucket. Picassa or Flickr probably more of a medium to long term option. If you've got Bt internet (and quite a few people I know didn't know it) you automatically get premium Flickr (whatever they call it, unlimited upload/view) account.
