This particularly seems to be a south west problem but it does get confusing.
Folks adding duplicate mine names especially by adding the word 'wheal' in front of an existing Aditnow database mine and calling it a newly added mine.
For instance 'Christopher Consols' has been on the database for ages. Now someone has added Wheal Christopher as a new mine... its the same mine...so all the data is now spread twice as thin and where does someone stick any new info on a split mine like that.
Its all over the database and getting worse, the word 'wheal' is the worst culprit for creating this I would guess.
Is there any way of the database detecting such duplications?
Maybe on the mapping position?
Names similar detection?
Can the word 'wheal' be rejected by the database when adding a mine?
Or is it a case that people have to have their brains a bit more in gear before they enthusiastically add a 'new' mine?
Or am I just rambling...!
Any suggestions??

The person who entered Wheal as a prefix did the correct thing
that's the way it's been for hundreds of years. It's those in the data base that omits wheal that's wrong, and that, in relevant terms hasn't been around five minutes

On the how to avoid it question. When I've got time to do more work on the site (I've got to rebuild certain parts first and that'll be quite a job) I'll add some duplicate checking.

When people add duplicates it's always well meant, people are just trying to help out with the database. But if everybody did a search first it would almost elimitate it because the mine name search on the home page would match Chirstopher Consols to Wheal Christopher Consols and vice versa.

However I know that duplicate checking would help and I'll add it just as soon as I have time spare to work on new code again. Along with the big re-write of the searching and location code. Probably early next year now though.

In the mean time, there's some very active and helpful regional editors particularly in the SW region so if anything incorrect is spotted post it up and I'm sure somebody will change it.

The word Wheal translates as work or working as applied to any mining work e,g, underground mine, open-cast, tin-stream or clay pit. To use the word Wheal as the O.S. do on maps and then add disused is bad grammer.
The Cornish for mine is Bal, Ball or Huel

what is more confusing than wheal is the ridiculous way some well known mines are listed, such as:- East Pool being under Pool East and that applies to other mines with a compass prefix

I am afraid that my good friend Roy M and I are guilty of a lot of this Mr Spitfire.
What happened was that there was a mass import from an existing database, possibly around 5,000 mines plus location details as well.
As far as "Wheal" argument goes, this has been argued before and this time I want to stay out of it.
Using the Mining Journal for reference there are of course mines that were known as a "Wheal X" and also just as "X".

I recently added Wheal Charlotte Tin Mine which was the name that I know it by, without realising that it was already in under "East Wheal Charlotte"
I can soon put this right myself, no worries.

The thing I personally find irritating about the mass import is the number of mines whose names are capitalised.

Thing to remember is that we all do our best, and better to help with the site and make the odd error than sit back and do nothing.

Sorry, can someone just tell me how to move my photographs to the correct location before I delete the duplicate mine that I created?

So its from the Cornish language, much the same as in Welsh, Wheal-Gwaith-Work.

ie. Gwaith Glo Abernant-Abernant Colliery

Open the album where the photo(s) currently are... so you can see all the thumbnails of the photos. Click...

Move - to start the process of moving to another album in the same mine

Move Mine - to start the process of moving to another album in another mine

Has to be done one at a time!

Hi Simon

There is no "Move mine" that I can see, but oddly there is just that in the mine that I want to move them to.

If you have 5 minutes, they are to leave "Charlotte (Wheal) Tin Mine" for the destination "East Wheal Charlotte".

Is there no 'move' / 'move mine' option under the photos in this album Roy?

http://www.aditnow.co.uk/album/Charlotte-Wheal-Tin-Mine-Tin-Mine-User-Album/

As a regional editor you should have facility to move any photo, not just your own, so you should see these two buttons under every photo. If you don't, I'm a bit confused

I have tried your link and got error, but sorry, no Err.Number

Yes you are correct, no "Move Mine" button.

If you are confused Simon, take Roys advice, forget it for now, log off, and go to your TV/Family or whatever.
Usually, these things become clear in the morning.

Ignore my last message Roy! I've found and fixed the bug... Regional editors, it appears, could move other people's photos but not their own 😞 Fixed now and all working as it should :)

I'm off to take your advice now 😉

On a similar note, T have a photofraph of Wheal Crab (formally wheal Chippendale) to upload but note that it is down as Crab Mixed mine. Could someone correct this please?

This is exactly waht happens and I could but will not put another entry in the database for Wheal Crab thus duplicating.

Ta.
poke around long enough and you'll find something..

Going back to mine names.
I have taken mine names from old ordance survey plans and local knowledge. I now find that the names the Coal Board uses are differant for the same mines.
Which name do you work too?
The other problem is that you get several named shafts/mines coming under one mine name.
The other problem is that you can get a new name if an old mine is opened up which is causing me confusion. These all tend to be old mines/pits either stopped or finishing early 1900 with narrow seams of coal which were unproductive. The railways and canals killed many off round 1870 when cheaper coal came from the Barnsley/Wakefield area West Yorkshire

Going right back to when I started this thread it seems from everyone's opinion that there is unlikely to be a cure-all solution to occurences of duplication.
If Simon can provide a duplication detection 'thingy' in the code that would be brilliant as an aid.
But it does seem the bottom line is that when entering a new mine folks have to curb their genuine enthusiasm and just do a thorough check for an existing version of their entry.
Look under entries with 'wheal'.
Check for back to front versions of the name.
Just generally have brain in gear before finger in puts.

Is that a fair summation??

Oh and just to add to the problem for Simon is there any way that mines that change names in their life, or merge or whatever can be cross referenced to each other!!!!

If I have a mine to upload and the name of that mine is wheal so & so, that is what it will be uploaded as, duplicate or not Nuf Sed
