The discussion re mine names suggests to me that their is a need for some sort of standard format for indexing mine names, which ideally should be accepted across the board not just for aditnow. My suggestion is that the name should be as it was when the mine was working. This subject is likely to come up in the not so distant future as it is likely that a major work on mining in Devon & Cornwall will hopefully be published which is likely to promote this debate again.
I have for many years now been working on what hopefully would be a fairly comprehensive index to Mining Journal references (including foreign, coal, ironwork, quarries etc), also adding refs from Geological Survey memoirs & any other sources I can find. The standard I have gone for, using South Crofty is an example, would be:
seperate entries for South Crofty Mine and South Wheal Crofty (as in this examlpe these could almost be considered as seperate mines)
South Wheal Crofty - with a footnote "or South Crofty Mine", "see also South Crofty Mine, Dudnance Mine, Longclose Mine, East Wheal Crofty"etc etc etc
South Crofty Mine - with a footnote "or South Crofty Ltd., South Crofty plc; see also South Wheal Crofty, Cornish Consolidated Tin Mines Ltd...etc etc.
Not sure if all these links would be required for a site such as aditnow, but it would be useful for anyone researching more detailed history. Of course the number of different mine names that would have been included in South Crofty is pretty huge & I am sure I have not got them all.
Grid refs - I have generally limited these to four figure refs (most mines cover a much larger area than 100m square, and there are plenty of examples of a mine"migrating" over time only to be replaced by a mine of a different name in their original location. Herodsfoot is a good example, which "migrated" south and was replaced by North Herodsfoot in its original location).
Referring to the upcoming publication referred to, it seems it will include terms such as Crofty South and Work Great; should West Great Work be Work, Great West or Great Work, west; and just Lovell - was that Wheal Lovell or The lovell which were seperate mines? All gobedegook to my mind. I must say just as much as "Wheal fortune mixed Mineral mine" is, surely that should just be Wheal Fortune.
