Hi folks, I'm just looking through the photographs of Middle level dressing floor, can anyone tell me what this photo is of and where the water comes from that flows from it? I don't recognise it as one of the levels or am I wrong!? or is this portal where Greenlaws hush meets the main burn?

This is the culvert that runs under the dressing floors. It is blocked not far from this exit end. We attempted to clear the upstream end with a machine - without success. The hole became too deep for safety.
The arch top of the culvert is visible in some areas upstream from the entrance.
Clearing this culvert would be a mammoth task - but would stop the stream eroding what is left of the dressing floors.
I have some photos taken up the culvert and during the machine work - I'll put them up later this week.

Thanks for the quick response Pete. Where does the culvert originate?
Do you also know where the hush disappears to? I know that it sinks not far from the bouseteams on the west side of the burn but I'm curious as to where it goes to!

I have deleted my incorrect posts. This should now make sense.

The water that sinks in the hush probably reappears in a culvert which is upstream of Middle level entrance on the west side of the valley. This has deep water and ends in a roof fall. Going downstream, the water from the hush and from the main burn was originally channelled into a culvert which is in situ but completely choked with rubble. The exit from the culvert is the photo that you first queried.

The site is written up in the Archaeology County Durham publication (Issue 8 2013), which has a plan (albeit at small scale).

From memory, the hush originally ran through to the burn, but was blocked by the later spoil dumps coming out of the level on the opposite bank. I don't think there is a 'formal' culvert under these dumps but I wouldn't be surprised if something was put in to tap the water off the hush and into the culvert which runs under the dressing floor. It is quite buried if it is there!
