Many years ago, be about early 1960s, a crowd of mates and I used to explore the limestone mines over at Dudley.
I can remember one tunnel just went on and on.
Suddenly everyone stopped dead, on the floor was the biggest most massive piece of excrement you could possibly imagine.
One of our crowd, a chap named Jimmy Ford exlaimed " I dont know what did that but I dont want to meet it!"
With one movement we all turned back.
Later in life I heard rumours of bears escaping from the zoo into the town through old workings.
Around Walsall there were a lot of old limestone workings, most have now been filled in.
One of the lakes in the Arbouretum, a park in Walsall centre was an old lime pit as we say round here and was reputed to link with Park Lime Pits over Aldridge.
There is an old pub, and I mean old, "The White Hart" in Caldmore reputed to be haunted and have a tunnel leading to St Matthews Church, which just happens to be above old limestone workings under Church Hill.
My avatar is a poor likeness.
