Not Cambridge, but not far away ...

There were chalk mines at Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, that caused significant subsidence problems.

See http://userweb.port.ac.uk/~gilesd/ppt/2004%20GMR%20Presentations/184834.ppt  for more info.

There is an underground mine in Cambs though, any guesses?

Er.... go on, tell us! 😉

Assuming we're not talking about Cambridge, Massachusetts, that is!

A bit lame, but it's definitely underground 😉

Crowborough Caves are one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area. Although the opening times are rather limited.

Many years ago, be about early 1960s, a crowd of mates and I used to explore the limestone mines over at Dudley.
I can remember one tunnel just went on and on.
Suddenly everyone stopped dead, on the floor was the biggest most massive piece of excrement you could possibly imagine.

One of our crowd, a chap named Jimmy Ford exlaimed " I dont know what did that but I dont want to meet it!"

With one movement we all turned back.

Later in life I heard rumours of bears escaping from the zoo into the town through old workings.

Around Walsall there were a lot of old limestone workings, most have now been filled in.
One of the lakes in the Arbouretum, a park in Walsall centre was an old lime pit as we say round here and was reputed to link with Park Lime Pits over Aldridge.
There is an old pub, and I mean old, "The White Hart" in Caldmore reputed to be haunted and have a tunnel leading to St Matthews Church, which just happens to be above old limestone workings under Church Hill.

These don't seem to have made it into the Aditnow database either.

I notice Crowborough crops up on that list too.

There are, or were, some tunnels in Crowborough on Ashdown Forest - i know because i've been down some of them. They were built during the first world war by sappers as part of their training.

You can still see the remains of entrances but most have collapsed now. Just south of the A26 at Poundgate not far from Old Toll Cottage (which is where my father lived).

Yes, I know them - I went to look at them a long time ago. The Crowborough Caves are a complete fabrication. If you know otherwise, please arrange a trip there for us all. I'll happily join you.

About 5 years ago I had the option of moving to Crowborough with work and the Crowborough Caves/Friends of thing almost swung it until I finally realised it was a well executed hoax. I think it was the thread about a Nancy Bellis doing some gynaecological shots in the caves for the Friends' charity calendar that set the warning lights off.

Mind I did have a very comfy night in a 4 poster in a plush hotel in Mayfield gratis as part of the work side of it.

No, it was John Barratt, Jimmy Ford, Mansel and Brian Stewart, John Nunns, Alex Ragusa, Al Platt and John Walters. They were the same Bryneglwys crowd.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
