Been in devis, raygill and wetgrooves. Any other evening trips on the must do list that don't involve SRT or deep water ? Burtersett stone mines perhaps ?

Many thanks.

Burtersett is a pleasant potter. You could have a poke about in Smithy Level at Whitaside over in Swaledale if you wanted somewhere a bit more involved. There are also some smaller stone mines at Stags Fell just off the Buttertubs road above Hardraw. Not huge from memory but will fill an hour or so of your time.

Bloomin' Heck, you must be a fast mover if you can do Buckden Gavel on an evening! :)

Massively interesting mine, always more to go back for.

Blimey, what long evenings everybody must have! :o

Sensing a Wensleydale bias in the original post Smithy Level is an easy drive and (almost) roadside. If there isn't such a bias then its still worth a visit anyway being a much more explorable mine than many in the dale.

I've heard talk of the bad air, but never experienced it personally on two visits. Weather dependent I guess.

Definately something to be aware of though.

Sloate Hole if you fancy a leg-stretch

Windegg if you fancy a squeeze

Shaw Level if you're not bothered about going to work the next day.. or any day ever again... (bad air level from Hell)

The last time we were up Punchard Gill was during one of those bitterly cold winters we had a few years ago. We stuck our heads into Routh and were quite surprised to find it flooded to about armpit depth at about the point where you come out of the shales into the main limestone.

It had been as dry as a desert previously with no obvious ingress of water from memory. Not sure what its like now!

Always meant to go back & look at the lower section of cave in Fox's but never have...

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
