Following a trip into Harnisha Burn mine today to evaluate any damage to the level caused by a recent huge detonation in the old limestone quarry above, the horse level roof has come in with what looks like another fall further in.
A risk assessment indicated that more falls were possible judging by the amount of loose unsupported rock now in the stope above, so we did not progress further ie to the original old fall - but boot prints on this new fall and beyond show that someone has obviously had a go.

I noted this earlier this year, but may now be worse. It appeared to me maily caused by timber rotting. This could be replaced bur would need to be brought to site.

it came in where the old fall with the squeeze was 2 or 3 months ago and was still rumbling above

the stoped bit above that fall was very precarious then. suspect that has come in as well now

The new fall is way before the old one. In fact not too far past the sump on the right that has a piece of corrugated iron across it. The blocks of rock are big (see pic by James L posted earlier). And the devastation in the old quarry above has to be seen - the entire quarry face has been blown across the quarry floor and into the Harnisha Burn.

is that where the very wobbly timbers are (or were)?? a couple of months back you could get as far as the old fall

We reckon the shock wave would've been enormous and since the level goes right under the quarry the whole place must've really been shaken.
So the impact further in? Who knows, someone is bound to have a look, but the original old fall (squeeze) may well be completely impassable now.

I passed the new fall Easter and old fall with tight sqeeze was unchanged. New fall needs attention, or leave for the rest to come down and then clear a road through?

I think it better to put timber in but will requre care. Timberman will need to work high up not from below for obvious reasons.

I doubt the bootprints were mine, too much time passed. Someone else may have been through. I remember another new fall further in, not much and easily stepped over.

EDIT just took a look at the photo, roughly as I remember it.

the original old fall is indeed totally impassable. that big jigsaw of boulder above the squeeze has come down with a lot more beside.

was in a bout 2 months back. there were new bits down, but nothing major fall wise till you got to the old fall

I brought down the loose boulders at the original fall. The plan is to return with a long bar in order to remove the fallen blocks. The space above should now be clear of unstable blocks. However, I have not seen the fall since the recent quarry work. Manxman - happy to join you on a visit.

Went in a few days after the blast and the old fall was impassable. Didn't look like alot of stuff to be moved but big blocks to be working underneath them.

I think the quarry is on Bolihope estate land,the quarry face was drilled and blown a few months back,I pass there every day to work,I stopped to have a look one day,the drill holes were quite sizeable in depth,not quite sure what the job was for,stone maybe for grouse butts ?

Current thinking is that there was an over-estimation in the amount of explosives needed.

They have moved a fair chunk of rock if it was only for grouse butts!

The original fall was never entirely solid so it probably didn't take much to block that...

The estate have made a new track going up the fell on Bolihope Common towards Harnisha Carrs,that might be a use the stone.
The blown face is not that far off the road, could have proved interesting.
