I am up in Swaledale for a few days walking holiday in October. I have drafted a few walks to do to take in some of the mines etc around Reeth.
Is there anything that is a must see that I have missed off from any of the walks - and also isn't too far off the current walks or doesn't change the routes much?

I have been up to the area for a day last year to see Marrick, Prys, Hurst, Old Gang, Surrender and Grinton (How)
I went in a mine once.... it was dark and scary..... full of weirdos

Routes 1 & 3 both put you tantalisingly close to Cobscar mill & chimney just over the watershed in Wensleydale. Having said that, tantalisingly close might just be too far on top of the 15 & 16 mile walks you already have planned presuming a fair degree of pottering will take place at each site! It might be easier to dash from the car and have a quick look along with Keldheads mill and the conveyor (& aerial ropeway?) remains at Preston-under-Scar if a couple spare hours present themselves.

Route No.2: I'd sincerely consider having a look at the Brandy Bottle Incline, Hard Level & the Old Gang Mills but cutting out the loop up to Surrender itself - unless time & energy is on your side. The Surrender Mills are roadside on the way back to Reeth if you go that way back.

There will be stuff missed on both walks I'm sure but its probably not worth losing too much sleep over it, though you might have too if you want to fit everything in!

Oh on route No.5 I'd detour to the pub at Twice Brewed as well. Good beer! Though make sure you get your round in before eleven, it closes on the .

Thanks RJV

I tried to get in Cobscar, but it was just a touch too far. Unfortunately, we missed it from last years visit aswell.
I am usually ok with doing 18 mile, 20 at a push; but due to the amount of wandering around and limited daylight I've only planed for 15/16 mile walks.

Route 2 has changed the most, originally I didn't have in Old Gang (did it last year). I will be parking opposite Surrender Mill.
The drag up to Surrender Mine doesn't look too bad and there appears to be a few nice gin circles up there (from the aerial views). Although taking out this loop, does mean that I can start from the B&B instead. Or finish a little earlier than usual and pull in Keldheads / Cobscar instead

I will also be hoping to get some night photos if the weather is ok, hoping to defo do Old Gang Mill at night (there should be a nice full moon to light it up instead of painting).

I'm also staying just down the road from Twice Brewed and it was already down for a visit 😉

Route 1 - You could have a look up Sleigill after you come down Fell End Hush. There are a number of levels up there.

Sorry Lee, I can't get the map to open now. Where is the B&B?

One thought for a further adaptation of No.2 Would be to hop on the dale bus up to Keld (presuming such things still exist) then string together a linear(ish) walk taking in Beldi Hill, Swinnergill, AD Co, Lownathwaite, Blakethwaite, Old Gang & the Surrender Ground, presuming you can manufacture a way back from there. The walk from Keld round to Swinnergill then over to Gunnerside Gill is one of my favourites.

Short detour up Sleigill should be easy to put in.

B&B is in Reeth village (north part), then I drive up to Haltwhistle along Hadrian Wall for a short visit. B&B is along the road to the south of Cawfield Quarry.

Beldi Hill was something I was hoping to get to try and see.
Never thought of getting a bus and walking back. The route 2 needs some thought - need to put all the places on a map 1st though.

I think I should have stayed another night in Dales

Thanks for the help, I have updated my routes and put on some of the key mines and other points of interest for the Yorkshire Dales stuff. Still not 100% about the Gunnerside route.

I might have a few spares hours on the 4th morning before heading up to Haltwhistle - to pull in a few of the extra sites

Looks like I will need a few more visits to the area to pull in some of the other sites.

Whose mad idea was it to go on a 5 day mining walk ::);D
