If you are in Gunnerside Gill over the coming weeks and months have a look at the re-built entrance to Sir Francis Level. It has been restored and had a replacement keystone put back with the wording taken from a photograph of the original keystone taken in 1964. A lot of work has gone into the re-build and it looks terrific.

Does this mean it is now possible to get into Sir Frances Level, and back to the shaft cages, without the chest/neck deep wade? I am hoping have a look around the Swaledale area when I am over in about 5 weeks - Sir Frances was certainly something I would like to see, but never expected to with the deep water.

Anybody up for a trip into something in Swaledale, Nenthead, or the Lakes around May 19-22?

The blockage causing the water to back up in the level is well inside, rebuilding the entrance will not have affected the trudge in sometimes neck deep water, depends on time of year and rainfall, however it is always cold 🙂

The re-build of the entrance will not lower the water level in Sir Francis Level. However, the top of the shaft used to access the mine now has a better steel door access and has been tidied up somewhat. Lowering the water level may be done soon but this will still leave a chest deep dip just before the turn rail before the engine room.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
