This photo shows the apparent clearing of a shaft rather than the sinking of such.
The location I believe to be Falmouth Consolidated Mine (Wheal Jane), at Baldhu in Cornwall. The shaft I suspect is Falmouth shaft.... although I could be wildly off target with that assumption!
Anyone else got any clues maybe. Let's start with an easy one..What is the make and model of the car and what year could it be?

I think that is Beechers shaft at Wheal Jane mine. I have seen similar photos in some of the Mining in Cornwall books.

I'll tell you for sure later. It's either falmouth shaft or green's shaft.

I think beechers had a more serious headgear... unless it's a prospecting job. It's either in the bullen or trounson books.

It's possible it is Beecher's but it's hard to catagoricaly relate any of the background features in the first picture to the ones in the picture below, which is beecher's
Certainly the headframe is a light one, more suited to clearing a shaft than sinking and of course there is no sign of any compressor house to power drills for sinking. The old looking collar wall also lends weight to a re-opening rather than a new venture.
Green's...? .......A possibility!....

Bullen #4 p54-55

Pic 1 Beechers shaft, 1940

Pic 2. Beechers 1908

No, I haven't got them the wrong way around!

Falmouth, Green's, Tremayne and Giles' were all fitted with headgears pretty much approximating pic 2. In the Falcons Time, by the looks of things.

Cheers Stu!

I've got pictures of four out of the five headframes on 'Falcons'. They must have spent a great deal of money -albeit other peoples - on opening this little lot. The initial investigative results were encouraging, but when the grades didn't live up to expectations they blamed it on the design of the mill which they (the management), could not get right and changed the specification from the original which had been designed by a German company. A protracted court case ensued lasting long after the company was wound up. The results of this case I never did get to find out, but the lawyers on both sides got fat from the proceeds . Nothing changes. >:(

Anyway, here are the pics I've got which I'll drop into the archive later.

Hey Stuey....!

Just found another one! Note the spelling; he obviously asked one of the locals what the shaft was called and got a very dialectical reply.

Just found this thread whilst perusing the interweb for information......

That looks like Tippet's East rather than West.

Interesting as I think Tippet's West is a more likely candidate for a modernish shaft.

Car looks like a Morris 8 2-door saloon from around 1935-9.
