Why is it when you leave a comment on a photo you do not have to leave your id next to it. i have had quite a few negative comments left (which i can take) but dont know who is leaveing them which is annoying because we then can not see what there photos are like in comparrison. i know that some of them that i have uploaded are not very good but they are the only photos of that site on this website so i would say to those who have left negative comments where are your photos of this site at. also would you like to see the photos with negative comments deleted

Let us not forget that this is NOT a photography competition, rather an attempt to record the remains of passing industry before its remains disappears into memory. If anyone wishes to make a negative (or positive) comment, then that is the risk the uploader must accept. The facility exists to discuss or comment on any photo simply by clicking the link underneath the uploaded photo, then we can all discuss the it, answer or ask questions. A very useful feature that I don't ever recall being used to critic a photographers ability 😉 😉

not saying we should not have the comment feature i just dont like the way some can hide behind the fact there user names are not shown so they can make comments which could come close to personal insults which i think is guttless

Ah well..... If you try to please everyone, all you will end up with is an ulcer. And, as you say in your first post, 'I Can Take It'. I on the other hand, would probably descend into a babbling, wailing wreck if someone expressed a reservation about any photo I have uploaded 😉 I would probably go around to their place and put worms thru their letterbox... or, maybe just forget about it.

The only way I can think of to get a vote retracted is to delete the photo in question, but only, of course, if you wish to deprive the rest of us of your work.....

no i would not want to deprive you all of these photos but the thought has crossed my mind why should we go to all the trouble of putting photos up here just for some one to put you down that could lead to people being less inclined to add photos or at least they are my own impressions

It looks from your post that you would prefer to opt out of the voting feature for your uploads, if such an option were available ?

To be honest (overworked phrase) I don't usually put any comments on pictures, nor do I bother to look and see if anyone has commented on mine - if people want to comment on the content or I want to comment on the content of other contributions, then I do through the forums, where discussion can take place and knowledge/information exchanged, which is what interests me. I am/was basically a recording photographer, so it's the content that interests me more than anything else, though I appreciate many others differ from me in this.

No i would not opt out of the voteing system its just the namesless comments that i find annoying. if they had something to say why not pm me put it up on the forum so we could discuss what is wrong rather than just leaveing a comment. some might not find my photos that interesting but i like to keep a record of each site so if there is an ore bin hush tip what ever i will take a photo some will find it interesting some will not but please do not comment on it if you find it boreing

I suspect that there may be an argument for removing the comments facility for photographs and just leaving the voting there.

The voting produces a top photograph for each month and I think that's a valid part of the site.

The comment on photograph feature has - in my opinion - been superseded by the ability to link photos directly into a forum post, where any questions are much more easily picked up on and discussed. This feature is very handy and is used quite frequently.

If the comments feature is thought to have been abused - and in my personal opinion it's getting close to that - then we'll have to have a think about removing it in order to concentrate on discussing photos in the forum.

If anyone does have any queries about photographs that they want answering, then I'd strongly suggest that they click the "Discuss this photo, *description* in the forum" link as that's going to get a much better response.

Note: the record of who voted for what and who left which comment is, I believe, held in the database, so the webmaster is able to find out who you are ;)

It would appear from your signature line that you are inviting people to do just that.... 😉

Its a fact that people will sometimes dwell on the negative, comfort yourself with the fact that whilst the voters prefer to remain anonymous for those pics with less than positive comments, you have an opportunity to set a better example.

Whats an opinion worth anyway if we dont know where it originates ? Not very much, but of course, that also applies to the positive opiniions too 😉

Very fine words Mr V.
I think the comment feature of the voting system is of limited use here. Perhaps on a purely photography site it would be appropriate....

Why not simply get rid of the option (which as it is now is set as default) of hiding your ID?

I was a bit surprised when this (or a similar point) came up before that the default was "don't leave ID" as on a couple of occasions I nearly for got to tick the box! Prior to that there was no option, and it was neccessary to type in ID manually each time, something I often forgot to do! not out of malice, just carelessness on my part.
