Any piece of graphics software (you usually get some free with a scanner or digital camera) will be able to resize a photo.

Adding auto-resize to the avatar upload is on my to-do list, but sorry it's not currently possible :(

Although of course uploading photos of mines, quarries etc. is handled differently and these are automatically resized to the various sizes you see on the site (small, medium and supersize) and automatically watermarked with your username to maintain your copyright at the largest size.
my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by

If you're using Windows XP Microsoft do a handy image resizer.

Scroll down the page here;

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Takes about 10 seconds to download. Once installed just right click on a photo and the resize option is in the menu.

Microsoft Office Picture Manager is good on Vista especially if doing a job lot.. simply create an album full of images you want to resize, select one and right click, open with Microsoft Office Picture Manager, once the manager is open you will see a thumb nail of the image you selected, then click on the Thumbnail View on the LH side of the top menu bar, this will now show all images in the album, then click edit pictures on menu at top and the resize option is on the RH side of the screen about half way down.

Highlight the imagea to be resized and click the re-size button, change the image size then save.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh Creeper!!!!!
