A bit of fun, nothing serious (and not intended to start a ferocious debate between the H&S bods) but what's the most worrying place you've ever underground?

Here's mine for starters, Vanoord did the decent thing when blocks of roof started falling and got the camera out

Never been anywhere worrying.
Every place I've been underground has been lovely and left me with that warm fuzzy feeling inside 😉

The only time I've ever had more than a slight nagging doubt about the sense of being there was the BA trip a few of us did ovver at Broughton Moor.
Down to 10.5% Oxygen, one way in/out climbing over a serious shale collpase (ok two of them) The [place has a dubious history, I know it was used for storing something during the war by the War Office (it lies beneath a huge wartime arms dump) although they deny all knowledge.
Once in there its beyond doubt that it was converted for storage by them. In one area half a dozen 35 gallon drums are lying rotting in a pool of water (I have reason to believe either still or at one time filled with a mustard concoction)
Changing airtanks 35 minutes in, at one point I wasn't sure I was going to manage 😉
It was quite a lot of fun though

hmm hearing a large rock tumble down the section that went to a shaft I was abbing down at the time. The very serious shouts of BELOW and the noise were not encouraging.

The ODE to joy connection was 'interesting' as i had to take my harness and helmet off. The gap had shrunk in 10 days from reasonably large to non existent.

How many of you have been lying in bed in the dark thinking of the day's underground exploration.
And you say to yourself 'NEVER AGAIN'!!
Then you do it again in a couple of weeks.

Then how many times has my wife said to me 'you are not going to anywhere dangerous are you'?
And I say 'no not dangerous at all'

I think the secret to not abandoning the interest of mine exploration is to never look up and study the condition of the roof. And pretend that a large piece of rock that is waiting to come down is not there at all.

I'm guessing thats Oakeley(!) off DE (is this new vein?)??
I remember JD with his complete finger easily inserted into one of the timbers round there 😮 😮
Didn't fancy going any further

Why do the words "of death" spring to mind 😢

That's the fabled Timbered Tunnel of (yes, you guessed it) Death, OV, just off Oakeley DE as you suggested.

I think this is my favourite photo of it:

if memory serves its at tilberwhaite, it was leading under about 40 ft of dead rock in the quarry higher up the hillside im assuming it was to bypass the workings it was certanley defying gravity.

some pretty dogey slate mines in Cumbria, Scald Cop on the old man, a rather ancien and unusual working has to be one of them, I didn't feel at all same when entering because we were quite high up on the mountain, so the weathering that took place on the rock was quite intense, thus splitting it over time. The entrance was small and tight, in a quarry that hadn't been worked since the 1880s - a dangerous climb down a scree slope, and underneath part of the quarryface that was splitting, brought us into the mine. Inside conditions were no better.

That pic of my friend was to show the immense size of the fracturing taking place.

[img]http://www.aditnow.co.uk/showimage?f=/community/Saddlestone,-Moss-Head,-Spion-Kop-and-Scald-Cop---August-2007-Image-036/[/img]

Since the mine was so old it had some weirdly small tunnels inside it like this one, in fact there is no evidence of any railway lines being used.

This is the way in, all the rock above this where Allan is was being held in place by more or less nothing!

I've edited it to show the picture correctly, all you need to do is copy and paste in one of the bits of code shown under the photo, but you need to get the whole bit so if you're just showing the photo you'd need:

[Img]http://www.aditnow.co.uk/showimage?f=/community/Personal-Album-252-Image-003/[/Img]

Which would show:

[img]http://www.aditnow.co.uk/showimage?f=/community/Personal-Album-252-Image-003/[/img]

And if you wanted to show the photo with a click to the full size version you'd need:

[Imgurl ]Personal-Album-252-Image-003[linkphoto]Personal-Album-252-Image-003[/linkphoto][/link]

Which would show:

🔗Personal-Album-252-Image-003[linkphoto]Personal-Album-252-Image-003[/linkphoto][/link]

If you accidentally miss a bit of the code out when copying and pasting (easily done I know) then it won't display right because the page won't know when to close the link off.

Ah! That makes sense now 🙂 It looked like the photographer was trying to get an action shot of the roof coming down.

I see now it's a stope 😞 😞
