Slightly more comfortable than baler twine!

Don't believe the lamp cost 3 pence if the helmet was 3 shillings. Perhaps they mean the lamp bracket cost 3d over the price of the plain helmet.

And they can't spell Acetylene.

Premier was 19/6d in Joseph Bryants (Bristol) around 1962. Came with spring clip for fibre helmet, seem to remember also had hook clip.

19/6d sounds more like it.

What are the detail differences that make you think its a Huwood helmet rather than a Protector?

must admit that I never learnt to tell the difference between the various fibre hard hats. The club I then belonged to ( 4C's in Cambridge ) had a sack of them which had been obtained very cheaply at a street market army-surplus dealer ( the NCB was discarding them wholesale in the 60s ) and it was a matter of grabbing one that fitted!

One member had a US-style Comfo-Cap ( a low-crown fibreglass unit made for American coal miners ) which was much admired. The Tex-o-Lex round-crown ones with the tiny triangular peak were also much sought after.

I've never seen a hook-mount acetylene lamp outside a museum.

Possibly. CS helmet would just be a commercially available helmet, with lamp bracket and chinstrap added? I'm sure shells could have been ordered in quantity without the original makers name.

I belive so, Phil Brown did once tell me that the shells were the same as another commercial make but he'd put his own cradles in them, couldn't remember what that other make was until I saw this.....

I have an ex-Geevor fibre helmet in my loft.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/nationonfilm/topics/tin-mining/background_conditions.shtml shows miners wearing stiffened felt hats and carbide lamps, but the epaulettes on both mens' coats suggests early post-WW2 period?

http://cassandralegacy.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html dated as 1939, I see both men are carrying gas mask bags - presumably WW1 surplus - and one seems to have a thermos flask.
