12/11/16 PDMHS AGM

A trip up to Matlock for the PDMHS AGM. A hearty buffet meal (very nice pie and sausage casserole) and lots of familiar faces and the chance to put a face to some familiar names!

Had a look round the new exhibition in the museum and the stained glass window :thumbup: If you haven't been definitely worth a look.

Then a couple of interesting talks on using the local archives and mine site ecology.

Then a bit of a sociable evening at the OCC where I stayed the night.

13/11/16 Masson Mine

Next day I met a work colleague and her family for a relaxed trip around Masson mine. The children were very well behaved and enthusiastic which was very pleasing. The young lady even waded waist deep into the shallow lake by the show cave gate to look in the flooded alcoves.

🔗109111[linkphoto]109111[/linkphoto][/link]

As noted in another thread the shallow lake in the large natural chamber was bone dry and we were able to look down the connection to the showcave here although it was too wet for us to explore.

17-29/1/2017 WCMS Dinner Weekend

A relaxed weekend at the WCMS cottage, lots of tea drinking and lounging around in the cottage. Got there in time for a bit of a stroll on the Friday before it got dark, visited Big Pit on the Saturday (very good!). An excellent meal on the Saturday evening. Then a walk up the old zig-zag tramway on Sunday.

25/3/17 Bryneglwys Slate Mine
A first for me to join an 'official' AN trip (unless you count the NAMHO event). It was good to put some faces to some more usernames! I took the Friday off work and travelled up at leisure, I'd planned a short walk in the afternoon but the traffic was so bad this ended up getting scrubbed. I'd done rather well with my budget B&B which turned out to be quite luxurious with a private lounge and en-suite.

We had an excellent trip around the mine on Saturday, despite some initial reservations my car made it up the forest tracks ok. The downward scrambles were a little more scrambly than I expected and I was glad I had brought my cowstails!

There was even birthday cakes afterwards :thumbsup:

29 April 2017, Apedale Colliery

I did the extended tour as recently advertised. I can confirm it is extremely good, we were underground for a couple of hours and saw quite a bit, I even dug out a splinter of coal with a pick. Our guide was excellent and all in all it was well worth doing, you can see the massive amount of work that has gone into opening it up. I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

If only it was a bit closer to Cambridge I would be sorely tempted to sign up as a volunteer!

Meanwhile Mrs T rode on the railway and also had a grand time. Since it was our wedding anniversary I had booked a hotel in Stoke, the restaurant we hoped to eat at was rather elusive and we ended up in the University eating at the Students Union, to round it off I thrashed her 3 times in a row at pool.

Sunday we had a walk up Kinder 🙂

27/5/17 Hughenden Manor

Having dropped Mrs T off at her conference I headed for the Hell Fire Caves car park, once there a sign informed me that the caves didn't open until 11am and since it was barely 9:30 I decided to do the short walk I had planned first. This took me to Hughenden Manor by a pleasant route through fields and woods. Notable were the large numbers of Red Kites flying about and a less pleasant encounter with someone in a BMW who I can only assume was a local farmer - it went something like this;

Walking along edge of field towards road, BMW driver comes to halt in front of me and winds window down;
BMW: you can't walk down there that's not a path.
Me: I think it is, it's on the map.
BMW: I've lived here all my life and that's not a path (looks about 12.....)
Me: *pulls out phone to consult map* ah yes you are right the path goes the other side of the hedge halfway down the field, it's pretty overgrown back there I must have missed it.
BMW: well you shouldn't have come down there it's not a path
Me: well no harm done I'll just go a couple of metres down this track and I'll be back on it.
BMW: you can't go down that track that's not a path either.
Me: *consults map again* actually that is a path its clearly marked
BMW: have you walked here before?
Me: no
BMW: well I've lived here all my life and that's not a path
Me: well I could walk back the way I came and back down the other side of this hedge on the correct path.
BMW: you can't go back the way you came that's not a path.
Me: you're being a bit of a t*#t don't you think?
BMW: *puts foot down, roars off*
Me: *takes 3 paces to the right back on to footpath and continues*

Anyhow once at Hughenden Hall I notice a sign pointing to the Icehouse, this turns out to have been used by the Air Ministry during the war to draw up plans for the Dambusters attacks and planned attacks on Hitler's 'Eagles Nest'. After refreshing myself in the tearoom I headed back noticing a tunnel entrance in the hillside below the Icehouse, Perhaps part of the Air Ministry operation?
