it's a fantastic programme loads of cave art carved by canadian troops as they waited to go up to the trenches
10 miles of big tunnels dug to hide20,000 troops from the germans

cant get the channel 😞 but my grandfather was a captain in the Royal Artillery, he was at Vimy Ridge. We have a few documents and photos of the time, as well as empty shells, about 6 ins tall, with Vimy Ridge April 1917 "punched" into them..on the side, dated 1914 underneath

It was chilling these tunnels were mines cut through chalk
the canadians were sat in there for weeks by the sound of it loads of ammunition and artifacts lying about
but the most haunting part was the sheer number of names written and dated on the walls along with names of dead colleagues and the fantastic carvings of regimental badges scrolls canadian symbols etc the air was fine and there was very small ammounts of cave in
all in all a good programme

Yes, all are solid brass, 5 ins tall and 3 ins dia.

Also have a larger one with the R.A. emblem on it, hung upside down in a wooden frame and used as a gong ! πŸ˜‰

I recently picked up the book "Beneath Flanders Fields" which gives a very good insight into the history and the technical side of tunneling during the 1914/18 war. Published in 2004 so still might be available.

Hi

On the the subject of WW I underground warfare a book well well worth reading is "Underground Warefare 1914-1918" by Simon Jones (2010) - Pen & Sword Books Ltd., 47 Church Street, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, S70 2As.

Plenty of great text, diagrams and good references.
