The following duplicates have been identified, which we are making available to the public for sale.
We have received offers for these books from a local dealer, but the members of the finance committee have an obligation as trustees to try and raise as much as possible for our charity when disposing of assets.
We do not have the facilities for a full auction, but will accept bids by mail, email, and phone (contact details below). The highest bid by 17.00 on the 15th May will have the book provided it is greater than the offer we have received from the local dealer.
“Breathing in Irrespirable Atmospheres” by Robert H Davis. G/VG. Library bookplate and then two stamps on the flyleaf, stamp on the title page verso and inside the very back cover. Black label on the spine. No dustwrapper. £50
“De Re Metallica” Agricola – facsimile, translation, H C Hoover 1912, recovered vellum (dirty and torn in one place on spine). Library bookplate and stamps on initial pages. Internally good, all woodcut illustrations intact. £500
“Fodinae Regales”, Sir John Pettus 1670, 3 plates, lacks frontis, original card boards. In poor condition. Some water damage on last pages. Library stamps and bookplate. Handwritten inscription on reverse of title page. £250
“Laws of Art and Nature”, Sir John Pettus. - Second edition of 1683 has later boards and is re-spined. Full leather bound with gold tooled spine and decorative leather tooling on boards. No library stamps. Good condition. £1400
“Memoir of the Hartley Colliery Accident.” Library stamps on initial pages and label on front cover. Good condition, slight damage to top of spine. Flyleaves discoloured. Includes various plates and diagrams. One plate is loose. £35
“Postlethwaite’s Mines and Mining in the English Lake District”, 1980. Original dustwrapper, Very Good condition. No library stamps. A facsimile reprint of the 1913 3rd edition. Includes fold-out plans. £25
“Observations on Coal and Iron in Staffordshire”, Henry Gray McNab 1801. Cloth bound with Institute gold stamp on front cover. Library bookplate and stamps. Water and soot damage to edges of pages, but otherwise fine, all text readable. £150

“Elements of Mineralogy”, Richard Kirwan. 1794 Vol 1 only 2nd Edition. Library stamps on title page and inside back cover. Leather half bound, slightly worn, with decorative tooling on the spine. Very good condition internally. £150
“Voyages Métallurgiques ou Recherches et Observations”, G Jars. 1774. Library bookplate and stamps. Full leather bound with (good) repairs, quite worn. Foxing to pages £300
“Cours professés a l’école des mines de Paris” 2nd part, 3rd volume, Atlas. M. J. Gallon. 1878 Leather half bound with beautiful marbled paper. Scuffed corners. Library stamps and labels. Note – contains figures only, no text, every page has a library stamp. £30
“Geological and topographical atlas accompanying the report of the Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel” Clarence King. 1876. Very large oversize book – approx A2 size. Leather half bound but leather scuffed and in poor condition. Library labels on front cover. Internally very good with only one small library stamp on title page. Colour pages are bright and clear.£200
“Sketches of the coalmines in Northumberland and Durham” T. H. Hair. Facsimile of 1844 edition. No Library Stamps. Not a good reproduction – poor quality blue-ish copies. With Preliminary essay on coal and the coal trade. £20

The guide prices shown are an aspiration, and in no manner reflect a guaranteed valuation of the book and are higher than the reserve price. In some cases Internet prices have varied greatly. Condition of the book, library stamps, rebinding all affect the price. Consider them to be the auctioneers opening figure.
Offers above the guide price are encouraged as your money will be going to a worthy cause, but offers below the guide price will be accepted with the proviso that you may not be informed of the reserve price described above. (We do not think it is fair when the dealer has made these offers in good faith to allow people to outbid him by £1)
If multiple bids are received for the same book, then we will attempt to inform you if your bid is not sufficient. You are recommended not to wait until the last day to make your bid as we can not guarantee that you will get an opportunity to increase your bid. The closing deadline for a particular book may be extended if late bids are considered to disadvantage a bidder and arrangements will be attempted to ensure all parties get a chance to reach their limit. All decisions by the librarian and the chair of the finance committee on the final buyer are final.
