:thumbsup:NAMHO Conference 2021
Date: Friday 2nd – Monday 5th July 2021
Location: Preston Montford, Shropshire
Theme: 60 Years of Mining Projects
Host: Shropshire Caving & Mining Club with support of other local organisations

This is just a heads up for anyone who might just have a space in their busy social calendars. it's early days yet, but preparations are just starting for what will hopefully be a ‘normal’ NAMHO Conference. At present SCMC are looking to use the same venue, a field study centre about 5 miles West of Shrewsbury, as we did in 2011. This allows the lectures, reasonable accommodation (including camping), catering and bar to all be on one site in a quiet rural location.
The conference theme is to coincide with SCMC’s 60th anniversary and to look at projects in the mining community that have developed with the growth of industrial archaeology and mine exploration during that period, along with the hopes of what the future might bring. Rob Vernon will be co-ordinating the lecture programme and anyone interested in making a presentation can in the first instance PM me so that I can pass on details.

We hope this will also encourage other clubs and societies to bring along displays on their local projects too.
The usual mix of trade stands, local interest and rescue groups will have the opportunity to attend as well.

Underground visits will be concentrated in Shropshire and the Welsh Borderlands, but with the possibility of a few visits further afield either side of the main conference. These will vary from dry, walk-in to multi pitch SRT. Some water may be present.

For those wanting to stay above ground, in addition to the lectures, there will be guided surface visits e.g. Ironbridge Gorge, and route guides for self-led walks around the West Shropshire mine sites.

Obviously, the current situation in the UK makes all of this impossible at present, but we would like to be optimistic and hope that by next summer a reasonable degree of normality has returned. Should this not be the case, then we would plan to proceed if a sensible approach can be achieved with the appropriate social distancing measures required. If these prove too impractical for a ‘live’ Conference, then we will aim to provide an online event of lectures, film presentations, photo competitions etc.

Finally, I regret to inform you that any purple beer tokens leftover from 2011 will no longer be valid. However, good beer will be a serious consideration to event organisers.

I'll be there! Hope to make up for the loss of both NAMHO 2020 and this year's Hidden Earth which has been cancelled.

Really enjoyed the last Shropshire NAMHO. Great venue. I particularly enjoyed the winch trip down Chapel Shaft(?) at Snailbeach. Hopefully they'll run that again.

A highlight for young Summer was Don's tales of taking a wee out of a train window, seemed to stick in her mind and come up in conversation for several years afterwards - but yes the underground trips were great too 🙂

I don't like winches.
Will be doing it on SRT like last time. Don't bother trying to figure me out.

Don't hold your breadth for a winch trip down Chapel shaft.
It's not on the agenda (yet).
Lot's of other options will be available

Date: Friday 2nd – Monday 5th July 2021
Location: Somewhere in South Shropshire
Theme: 60 Years of Mining Projects
Host: Shropshire Caving & Mining Club with support of other local organisations

Apologies for this being a long entry, but we just want to ensure that everyone is kept informed:

The Coronavirus pandemic continues, but there are signs of optimism, and hopefully many of us may be vaccinated against the disease by the time NAMHO 2021 takes place.
The Shropshire Caving and Mining Club still intends to hold a Conference in South Shropshire (2nd to 5th July 2021), and some progress has been made in its planning. However, with the remaining uncertainties we have decided that the original choice of venue is no longer suitable. A more modest option of a village hall is now to be adopted.

It is intended to carry out underground and surface field events, as well as a full talks programme, and they will obviously be conducted under whatever Covid-19 guidelines may be in place at the time. Presently, we are looking at a range of choices on venue, so are unable to provide clearer details at the moment. It also seems likely that individual delegates will have to sort out their own accommodation and catering arrangements, as these are the elements most likely to be disrupted by COVID-19 restrictions in terms of mass gatherings.

SCMC have already sent out a flyer via the NAMHO Newsletter requesting potential speakers who might attend the Conference. It is understandable that given the situation uptake has been slow. No one wants to make a decision so far ahead. On the plus side, the rapid growth in video meetings and conferencing since lockdown provides us with an additional opportunity for this conference. We believe that we should have sufficient onsite facilities to allow us to both provide a virtual programme of lectures, as well as a real time live event (where numbers indoors may still be controlled). Further it will also be possible for speakers to provide an online presentation if they are not able to attend in person. This obviously provides international speakers with an opportunity too.

One aspect of planning the event is to know the approximate number of people who might attend so that equipment and human resources can be allocated to the different functions. It would help us immensely to have an estimate of how many might attend the Conference.

If you intend to come to the NAMHO Conference next year please contact the Conference organisers to register your interest. This will also allow us to e-mail you updates on trips, lectures and the overall programme as it becomes available.

Email [email protected] to register your intent to attend the NAMHO Conference next year. If you are shielding or have any concerns on the safety of the event then the virtual option will be available, but we would still like to hear from you. We will run a centralised booking system using the same software that has been used in the last few years, but we may not launch it for active booking until February or March.

Please also contact Rob Vernon directly if you intend to give a presentation. [email protected].

If you have any queries, I am happy to try and answer them by PM (private message) or contact the organisers directly on [email protected]

Hoping to see many of you next Summer

Will check out out, but was working OK yesterday.

Can I assume yourself and Joanne might be venturing to Shropshire next July?

Hi Alan,
Yes, that's a fair assumption.
