One quick note on this, in another thread some time back a permission trip to Middleton was suggested. As far as I'm aware access is not granted for trips, so please don't read "something big OR srt-intensive" as implying Middleton, it isn't.

If anyone is keen or thin enough why not do Masson Quarry Queens Mine Jant Mine and out of Youds.

I am keen but it very much depends upon what you mean by thin!

Wouldn't have the foggiest about the route however. Is it easy to figure out or would a leader help? :)

(is it actually a different route to the normal Gentlewomans/Jant(?)/Youds trip or one & the same?)

If you want SRT, you could do worse than the Oxlow - Maskill exchange.

I'm certain I'll be able to make some or all of that weekend, and will have a ponder on noteworthy SRT venues in the area...

Near Masson Quarry is a 130 Ft shaft route finding is just down dip till you get to a crawl then climb in the roof following the upper level till you have to climb down.
The passage slopes down into the Overseer chamber, at the bottom is a small stream going thru a triangular hole, you are laid in the water going thru. This is the first of two tight bits into Jant Mine with lots of calcite on the floor "you need kneepads" also its a good idea to leave some one at the shaft to guard the rope and to pull up your srt gear if you go thru.
I would be happy to guide but not sure if I would fit thru now.

The squeezes pretty much got washed out a year or so back...they're not tight at all any more...

That's a shame.

I think they were always of the tight 'fun' variety than tight 'struggle' type anyway? I don't recall them being much more than humourous and I'm far from being a midget...

I remember being pretty daunted by the squeeze descriptions the first time I went through, and was rather relieved when I finally got there - and this is before the so-called 'clearance'. If it had been solid rock it may have been different, but as with all squeezes, you either fit through or you don't, but there's no chance of getting stuck whatever happens. Just that the return trip from that point would be a bit more tiring! But as you can just dig it out and then refill it, it's hardly a worry. Remember the original PDMHS diggers cleared all of this by hand, and going uphill.

That said, the coffin-level is a painful slog if you're normal height or taller, and I find that to be easily the worst part of the trip. I'd be happier exiting via the 80m Day Shaft than the coffin level personally, but that would mean pre-rigging in advance, and exiting on the farm land uphill, so we've never quite managed that yet. One day I plan to do a reverse trip, if I can persuade anyone - down the Day Shaft and then uphill to the quarry shaft and out that way. And praying that no-one decides to descend whilst we're climbing out! Incidentally, does the usual entrance shaft actually have a name?

As for squeezes in general, the ones going through the Dynamite Series in Carlswark (via the Flower Pot entrance) are pretty good training - both for contorting one's body and for maintaining a 'calm outlook'. The Iron Maiden in Perryfoot Cave is still the scariest squeeze I've ever done - I chickened out the last time we went in there, even though I'd passed it before. But it was so traumatic, I decided once was enough.

I've done the Iron Maiden in Perryfoot once but remember it as a tight tortuous struggle...but I've never made it through Freeze Squeeze in Nettle or The Yoga Hole in Dr Jacksons.

The farmer at Greenslade (???) Farm is always pretty amenable if you want to rig Day Shaft for a through trip.

If the group is stopping at the Miners, there's the possibility of getting into some of the less-well known Winster mines like Drake or Limekiln on the Sunday if people fancy that - I can see about arranging that if so?

Now that would be an interesting trip. Drake is especially good, but any of those sites nearby would be worthwhile, and I'd love to see more of them.

Thanks for all the ideas and offers, much appreciated, will be a good weekend :)

Edit regarding dates... I did manage to put the date in incorrectly as the 29th May... Corrected now to 30th May (so the weekend of 30/31 May). Sorry about that, and hope it's clear.

I would be up for Daylight shaft then up Phil, will make a nice change! I have to say Gentlewoman's shaft doesn't look like the funest of ascents though!

I loved flowerpot to carlsw, an excellent and fun trip, even for lanky folk like me!

Now I have never done snake mine, so perhaps this can be put on the shortlist??

Olly.

I'd be happy with the Daylight Shaft (is that the one down a short passage on your left you pass heading outbye?) though it would be a shame not to travel down the coffin level if anybody comes who hasn't been before. It really is a rather excellent example. But easy enough to split into small groups.

As for Gentlewomans, I seem to remember it being about the same width as Bitch Pitch but without the rebelays and possibly with a greater hade? I don't think getting out would be too much of a problem. Though I might not be remembering it correctly!

Snake is a really interesting little mine but we did the Masson mines & Snake on a previous Derbyshire weekend, I'm not sure how much enthusiasm there would be to repeat the full weekend. Though both could feasibly be done in one day if people hurry up...

I'd agree somewhere other than snake mine would be good this time, just to avoid a complete repeat of last time's trip. But if there's a group who want to go there, we could split into two groups.

Give some thought to Robins Shaft Mine, a frequently overlooked gem.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
