It's all pretty complex underground there, the miners found a network of bedding plane caves full of sediment which they dug out and buddled the lead out of it, though you can get a sense of what the work was like by the fact that Shack vein has the alternative name of "Shitten Hole", as confirmed by the Barmaster's map!

Shaft 36 is not shown with any workings on the plan in the article, but that's Limekiln mine, dug out by Buster Wright c.2001, there's a rough plan in an old Descent. It has one advantage over Drake in that the shaft can be rigged with a rebelay, so speeding up exit.

Slightly OT...but what's the score with access into Burning Drake? I know the main shaft is in a private garden...but are there other ways in...
Feel free to PM me if sensitive :)
Cheers!

The honest answer to that is that I don't know what the response to someone other than a "known face" asking to go down the shafts would be. Some shafts are on Painterway Farm's land, some are in people's back gardens and I think some may be on a different farm's ground

I'll ask John whether the various owners would be amenable to other people asking or not.

I asked the question last night, and the response was "doubtful".

The Derbyshire weekend is only a couple of weeks away.

Apologies first - I've been so mad busy of late that I haven't really had a time to think about it; so I've no idea what we're doing!

Only a few of us coming; me, RockChick, Jones the Slate, JCam and Droid.

Will get in touch with the Miners Standard re. camping. Droid / JCam - are you in need of a pitch?

Thank you very much for all the trip offers and suggestions. We'd best decide what we're doing I guess.

my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by

Just bumping this back up the list!
I've gotten slightly confused with the general plans for the weekend, AR, Old Git, are you guys still around for the weekend, and are we ok to happily rely on you to tell us what we're doing?! :flowers:
Please don't feel obliged to, if you're busy, just let us know and we'll sort something out.
Thanks,
Crocodile 1, Space ship 0!

I hadn't forgotten about this - I had thought I might not be around for the weekend, but it's now looking like I should be around for at least the Sunday. I have got something lined up....

Sunday's jaunt is going to be a winch trip (location not publicised at request of the winch owner), for which people will need sit harness and cowstails, also kneepads as there'll be some crawling. We'll meet at 9.30 on Sunday at the Miner's Arms, Winster and decant into a couple of cars to get to the location for around 10.

Missed John's previous post. It was the Sunday that scuppered my plans too but might hopefully be able to manage the Saturday, will look into it but don't book me a camping place for the time being.

Are there any ideas for a Saturday trip yet? I don't drive, so hitting Winster for a 9.30 Sunday morning start is impossible from Sheffield using the current bus service. If only my 'Peak Underground' dream service existed, calling at all major sites!

But if the Sat trip is somewhere more manageable I can probably do it. The Castleton area would be my dream scenario, but I can also make Matlock centre, Bakewell, Calver, Stoney, Eyam, as they're all on major routes. Camping for me is pretty much out for obvious reasons of kit-drowning, but I'm happy to travel to trips.

Phil, assuming the first bus for Sunday is on time I could collect you from Bakewell at 9.20 and just about make it to the Miner's for 9.30?

Adam

That's a big assumption given the record, but I guess the first one of the day can't be that far out, especially as it doesn't seem to do Chatsworth. Plenty home again later too - sounds like a plan!

I think both Owd Git and myself would like to join both the Saturday and Sunday trips-particularly if we've got the destinations right!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
