If it wasn't for the fact that that is a real notice, it would be quite funny.

How the fcuk would you light it without removing the packaging then?

I also like Do not move a lighted candle. Obviously you couldn't have walked round a house using one as a light before gas and electric lighting was invented. I wonder how they managed?

What about all those miners with the candle stuck on their felt hats? 😮

I also wonder what they would make of the clip on candles for Xmas trees which were in use in the 1950s.

You missed out on a good day underground. But we did eat your share of the 'lopscows' and drank your 'whiskey'. 😉
Thanks to Rockchick for the feast, brilliant.

Just looked at the pictures, feeling quite envious of you all.
Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.

Walking around Cwmorthin today with the paraffin lamps makes me appreciate how difficult and dangerous it was working with only a light of a candle in the old days.
Not only was it difficult to see where one is going, but would be extremely difficult to see the chamber face and the roof would be way out of sight.
Yes indeed a great and very educational day.

Thanks everybody who came along and made today so memorable  And especially to Rockchick for the cawl... Om nom nom nom 😉

I think it was Jagman who commented that too much light makes the underground not feel like the underground. It's very true.

Walking around Cwmorthin by lamplight was very atmospheric; and for my part it made me appreciate the place more, even from such a simple perspective as watching every footstep. Mostly because you couldn't see where you were putting them ;)

Up by lamplight is easier than down; the shadows fall more usefully.

I have been thinking a lot about Hymac's comment whilst eating lunch. Who (aside from moden day explorers) last sat in that walled off tunnel for a lunch break; how did they live, work and die; what was the talk in the caban of?

Ta for the photo uploads. Just waiting on the film offers next

though i wasnt on the Lamplight trip i was in Cwm, and on our way out it was nice to smell your partys lamps, makes you think what it smelt like underground in its hayday.

nice to see Simon and Rockchick in period costumes 🙂

Judging by yesterdays wanderings, they lived worked and died mostly in the dark 🙂

I have to say I'm very envious of you all making the effort to re-create a little of the past. The sepia photo looks very "atmospheric", well done Rockchick & Simon
