Think we drained all those that could be easily drained, any left needed a mattock / pick to deal with, I'm not about this weekend but will be there bank holiday weekend if you want some help. I recon 2 will be the best bet as you can't get into the top part at all then maybe 12 which has some branches which don't have the ends marked?

Today I had a walk up Rhosydd, then took the pony track to the Stwlan dam to make my way down the tarmac road to the car park.
While on the shoulder of Moelwyn bach I went to have a look down towards Pant Mawr and Fron Boeth when I saw five helicopters parked at where we call the level 18 where the mill and boiler are.
Four were dark blue and one was white and blue, not sure who they were as it was too far to have a chat.
Anyway I took some photos from around level one, not brilliant, but they were was a fair distance from me.
Wonder who they were??

From the photo they look like Robinson R44 helicopters (or similar, I'm no expert on helicopters, just done some web searching).

I think the R44 is a light and relatively cheap helicopter used, amongst other things, for training. After a bit more searching, I've discovered that Helicopter Services Limited of Wycombe Air Park offer "Mountain Flying in North Wales - two-day weekend event", so maybe that was what it was.

(Or else it was some very rich mine explorers!)

How did you get on with the dig at Pant mawr?

Davel, good detection work there

We did well, broke through the fall on 12 and dug out enough so it started to drain, but it's going to need a week or so to see how much effect we've had, bloody hard work that one. Dropped the level in 9 by I guess another foot but it's still draining, about a gallon a second I recon. 10 has a horrid bog, like walking on a sponge unless you stamp on it and you go straight through. cut a slit through it and gallons were draining from it even hours later so were hoping the adit will be draining too.

A hellicopter would make mine exploring easier, especially one big enough to carry a mini digger

Hope we didn't flood you Hymac πŸ˜‰

No you did not flood me at all as I was above you on the shoulder of the Moelwyns πŸ˜‰ .
If I knew you were there i would have come down and given you a spell with the digging, will give you credit for doing the work though  . Will be interesting to see what is behind the fall and the water.
Went to the original 'Cwt Y Bugail' this morning. The main entry adit behind the mill has about 2 to 3 ft of water in it. Although there are other ways in.
Would make an interesting project to drain that sometime in the near future.

I *think* you can get to the other end of that tunnel from the other side of the hill?
Hello again darkness, my old friend...

Yes, you can. I remember looking at that adit some years back and thinking no, it's too deep for wellies. Having then explored the pit etc we headed back out of an adit which got deeper in the second half of it. We went on, only to discover it was the same adit we had rejected earlier. We just made it without getting wet feet by going slowly so as not to create a "bow wave".

You can, the north end of it is in the south twll, and there is a corresponding tunnel (dry) leading from the north twll to the south twll.

Also, there is a side tunnel leading west off the tunnel between the two twllau which goes to the back vein chambers.

I know, I have been to the other side of the adit. But I stopped when the water got over boot height.
I just thought it would be a good idea to clear the weeds and bog that stop water coming out of the adit.
I might go over next Saturday if it is not raining with the 'battog' (wide sort of pick) to start on a trench to let the water out.
Anyone is welcome to help πŸ™‚

They were flying over the Carnedds as well. They were very low flying up to the black ladders in pairs. I thought that they were filming. They were < 50m above the ground a lot of the time.

Forgot to add, Steve and I found where Pant Mawr breaks through to the surface (I assume for ventilation) I crawled down about half way but it's a very loose steep floor leading to what may well be a vertial drop in to the chamber, I'd like a proper look but anchored to a rope just incase. It's about 15 meters at about 30 degrees before the drop, unlike the adits it's not fenced or protected in any way.

Is this the darkened patch you mentioned from google earth when we visited Fron Boeth?
