I said i'd look this up when we got home.

The Russian forces overran most of the region in 1914 after defeating the Austro-Hungarian army in a chaotic frontier battle in the opening months of the war. They were in turn pushed out in the spring and summer of 1915 by a combined German and Austro-Hungarian offensive.

So the newspaper was from early 1915.

One article refers to a Lieutenant Commander Martin Eric Nasmith being awarded the VC as reported by the London Gazette.

The report was made in the London Gazette on 25th June 1915 so I presume the paper would be dated within a day or two of that.

It seems that his VC was partly won as a result of turning back from safety to escort a coal ship to port.
