Simon, is there any way that regional editors can be given permissions to upright photographs which are uploaded on their side?
Or possibly the person uploading them once they see what they have done?

I dont know about other people but I am really getting p----d of with this. There has been threads on this before.

I loaded my recent photographs right way up and they ended up on their side in some cases... I cant find a way of correcting them...or am I being thick?:flowers:

I've had that problem a few times, usually when I've uploaded a landscape format image (I think :confused: ) my, probably inelegant, solution is to delete the pic, crop it slightly, and re-upload, that seems to work. In my case I'm using Windows own photo editing app and I think SimonRL and others have, in the past, suggested it's a problem with that software. I'd imagine some other contributor can give a much better approach.

And well done in matching christwigg with a whitwash of UK pics, I suspect someone will step up to the challenge and upload enough for both the UK and the International pages:devil:

But in summary any fix is going to mean Simon spending a lot of his own 'free' time to alter the way the site works.

Are the people who have the problem uploading the files straight from the camera?

I've never had the problem because I always resize my photos to something like 1280 x 800 before I upload them anyway. Little point spending extra time uploading everything at 50 gazillion megapixels.

Not in my case Chris, they have generally been from a low res digitiser (1000 by 1000) from JFM and Harry Parker's original transparencies or scanned prints. Having has a quick check on a couple I know I had to mess about with a bit ( a very brief fix) they were both portrait (not landscape) format. I don't think pixels are a specific issue as the Swaledale map is very high res 24000 by 11500) and uploaded quite happily (if a little slowly).

It's not the fault of the people who see their photos appear sideways; it's dumbed down cameras and software :(

The work involved in adding a tool to rotate the original image and delete the cached thumbnails etc. is definitely non-trivial. I've had a look at it and think it'd take me about a day and a half to implement.

No, neither of those look like they would run on a Windows Server.

There are native .NET controls for rotating and manipulating images.

pretty sure there's a win release of imagemagick around now, or at least a pack of binaries that can be installed.

IM is super awesome at doing this sort of stuff server side with just a single line

Thanks. I've had a quick read of the setup instructions it isn't something I'd use.

Reason being AN sits on a live production server that my business relies on, so messing around with command line installs and fiddling with the registry is not something I'd entertain.

If we had a vote between:

A) lumbering Simon with yet more work to change something that few of us see as a problem;
B) encouraging people to sort out their own images.

I know which I'd choose.

Not quite sure what was going as I did try and cheat by putting them on their side to but it stayed there :o

They were edited on Picasa not Win ..... sorry for the photo splurge but am finally sorting my SW photos again

No worries at all on the photo splurge Ian! :thumbup:

I think Picassa stores a bit of EXIF data in images to say "display this rotated by 90 degrees" rather than actually rotating the source file. So Picassa will display it correctly, but when the photo is uploaded to the internet* the EXIF data isn't imported and so the image is displayed as it is actually saved - i.e. on it's side.

* I suspect Facebook. Flikr similar will read in the EXIF data and correct during the upload. But my upload code isn't that clever.

If it's an EXIF issue, just save the images as .BMP (Windows Bitmap) format, and then re-save as .JPG - simples! .BMP was developed long before EXIF data was added, and so all the data is dropped. It's not really Simon's job to make sure photos are the right way up, surely?

I've never had this problem but would simply delete, sort out, and re-up.
Agree that up-loader should be responsible for correct presentation.

I have seen this before on other websites... looking at a few sources it appears to be a Windows Photo Editor/Viewer thing... landscape fer me going forwards lol

I think (I stress I'm not saying for sure, I don't use Picassa) but that's exactly the issue - Picassa isn't rotating them, it's just saving them with some data to say "display this rotated".

Is that correct?

Its an odd one as all display right on Picasa, Win Ed and CS6 but oddly if I save them on my portable HD they go landscape too
