Any suggestions for a new tripod? I was cleaning mine today and the end came off. It had been getting a bit floppy so it was probably time for a new one.

Any suggestions? I tried the £10 Tesco style, but only ever got one trip out of them. But I don't want to spend a fortune on one either to get it muddy and bashed around ::)

Can suggest that you don't get one from Maplins, mine exploded trying to squeeze it into a bag a fortnight back...

Hi Simon,

depends what you're looking for - I guess compact, lightweight and steady for longer exposures.

The next question is, would it be for a compact or a heavier SLR?

I've been using one of these Cullmann Magics for years, a very sturdy tripod:
http://www.cullmann.de/en/results/cat/magic.html

The 2 great things about them

1.They fold flat and short
2.You can take out the central column, screw one of the telescopic legs on to it and you have a monopod which is a great solution for steady shooting in tight spaces.

Only one drawback - they cost almost 10 times as much as the Tesco offerings - but at least you get a tripod that'll last a lifetime.

They've been pretty popular over the years (mine is about 30 years old) so I wouldn't be surprised if there are some offered on the bay, so you might get one at a knock-down price.

Cheers from Teutonia

I can recommend mine (if you remember I nearly hit you with it from 50 foot above a fortnight ago) it still works.
Boot's own make, all metal £1 from a charity shop, I use Age Concern because I'm probably going to need their help shortly. RJV might prefer the British Heart Foundation.

20 squids worth of camera exchange 4 years ago and still going strong (less c***s/mines than yours) Si - you pays your money and takes your chances methinks!

I got one from 7day shop for £7 a few years back and it's still going strong.

Mind you more often than not it's just left in the boot of the car...

Slik Sprint Mini II GM Ball Head Tripod 3415

Tiny little things that stand up well,

My one (a much older brother to this) been smashed against every wall in the Firemans Hose climb in Hendre, when I decided I didn't *need* to take my bag off... 😞

When I replace it, that's what I'll be getting.

Manfrotto make some good ones too.

Vanguard do a large range from cheap and cheerful (but practical) to carbon fibre models that cost the earth.
I've got one of their cheapest and it's great.
Try this

:) bargain!!!

Mine is a Manfrotto and folds nice and small yet still open to nearly 5ft height. I will get the part number for you 🙂

I've got the same tripod that Roy Morton suggested. It's sturdy, cheap and has lasted me over a year (and i'm exploring most weekends).

Only downside is, that its quite bulky and heavy, not ideal for tight spaces.

I'm going to get a Manfrotto next and use either one, depending on the trip.

Mine's a little Manfrotto about £48 a couple of years ago, has stood up well to the underground and underwater when I lost it in a sough & had to go and find it !
The management thanks you for your co operation.

Seriously ??

Clearly theres a company thats never read Viz closely enough.

On the subject of tripods, i've got a 70s job with telescopic legs that folds flat that I got in a box of camera junk.
Its fantastic as there no winding or unlocking mechanisms involved which is very useful when you're covered in mud and wearing gloves.

Unfortuantely i've never seen anything like it being made currently.

Funny how it's the only girl on this thread (I think) to comment on this Rockchick. Maybe the rest of us are worried it might be contagious!

Three ally scaffold poles? Loads of other uses for them in a mine and they probably won't buckle under the weight of your big camera Simon.
