Use of open flame lighting for photography

Photos like this are taken by this french chap who likes to make vibrant underground pics like this one.
It looks to me some kind of open-flame lighting has been used here, which I do have a fondness for - and wouldn't mind doing an experimental visit to a boring nearby mine sometimes and just take photos using candles and an old miner's lamp which I've recently aquired.

Anyone tried this? ::)

This guy has some brilliant pictures, really worth a look through his gallery.
LAP, is open-flame the same as those carbide lamps or does it mean something else?

Talking of alternative flashes, I've noticed that for really big chambers it is difficult to light using one flash. It would be interesting if you could.

I nearly blinded myself trialing a particular demo. The combustion of magnesium powder and sulphur, both readily available. Get the finest powders you can and mix 24:32 Mg:S and set it off remotely, either with a bare bulb imbedded in the mixture or a sparkler.

The resulting concentrated flash would cast very sharp shadows and illuminate huge chambers.

You could sort of say it was a bare flame.

I reckon you'd be looking at very long exposure times with candlelight.

Yep i suppose they count as open-flame. 😉

Just got a message off the guy, he says it was lit with a Gaz lantern. Don't know what one of them is though. Anyone heard of them?

I tried doing a long exposure using a few tea lights in Box mine a few years ago. Not a bad pic but for places like the Cathedral, you would need a huge flame. Cant find the picture i took to show.

Exposure times were huge IIRC, and on the camera i had at the time, this produced alot of 'noise'. Maybe time to have another go with the 450D me thinks.

Just realised my avatar was taken using a sort of flame, couple of Roman candles i think!. And no i aint telling where it was taken, surfice to say that its underground.

Cheers LAP, I know exactly what these are now, just didnt connect it with underground lighting! I think my dad still has one from our old camping days, might have to try it.

I recall an attempt up on Floor 4 in Cwmorthin with MerddinEmrys present that produced some dreadful photographs by candlelight - I'll try and dig them out tomorrow (they're on the other computer).
