I heard today on the radio that the Olympic flame was being transported by air in a "mining safety lamp" is this the case?

Apparently only a Garforth will do.

Must be a modified Garforth then.....otherwise, how would they get the flame out?

And why is that bloke setting fire to his beard? wouldn't it be less painful to shave?

Maybe that was the only way they could transfer the flame - via his beard!

I wonder what they did on previous occasions?

The BBC described it as an 'enclosed lantern'. Poor old Mr Davey never got a mention

Why not? It'll just be a drop in the ocean compared to what this olympic show is costing :glare:

Shame they won't be dloing the relay with the flame in the safety lamp, rather than the official torch. I look at it and keep thinking it was designed by Ali-G,who came up with the giant bling spliff....

Missis phoned me today to say she'd seen Prinsess Anne with an oil lamp on the news.
I was most disapointed to hear she was not wearing a donkey & carrying a dipstick 🙂

All this talk of Davey lamps has reminded me of something a friend once mentioned.
He went to Truro Cathedral School (public) and said that most of Davey's developments were conducted in the schools science labs, and that much of his equipment was still there along with parts from prototypes; that was in the mid to late 1960's. Just what has happened to all that stuff now is anyone's guess, but it would be nice to know it was in safe hands and has not been fed into some skip, like some of the stuff from CSM was when they moved premises BOTH TIMES!
Their mineral collection had labels that were seperated from the samples and so they binned the samples :curse:
There were also beautifully made wooden models of crystals (victorian) which I have seen similar selling for amazingly high prices on ebay.
Anyway, I think I might just try to chase up the Davey story and see where it goes.

There have apparently already been a couple of instances of the flame going out! It would seem to make alot of sense to carry it in the safety lamp all the time - would there be any way of topping the lamp up with it still lit?

Watch this footage for some Davy relics at the Royal Society.

The extra footage at

is worth watching too - it mentions the Olympic flame.

At last! The correct spelling Sir Humphry's name appears in a post.

You can bet this has happened all over. I bought a lamp from a woman who'd taught at Huddersfield tech. When the mining department closed all the display & teaching lamps were put in a cardboard box & shoved out into the corridor. The staff were invited to help themselves & she took two. I asked her to describe some that were left in the box & it sounded like one was a Clowes patent 😞 , the one with the hydrogen cylinder on the side. Apparently that hung around quite a while before it went. One sold on ebay 4or5 months back for over 3 grand, ah well...
