I'm keen on replacing my alloy rack bars (*detonates bomb vest*) on my old rack when my new ones wear down a bit more, the first 2 with SS.

I've taken to using a stop for little/fiddly stuff and the big J rack for "proper" pitches.

Has anyone ever tried fitting non-petzl (ie:- CMC etc) american rack bars to their petzl piece of kit. I think the spacings are pretty standard, but having overly floppy bars might be a bit of a pain.

I would just get some stainless tube machined to match the Petzl bars. Probably no more expensive, depending on whether you have a friendly machinist to hand...
Don't look so embarrassed, it's a family trait...

The alloy ones do seem to wear at an unacceptable rate. Just the first two. I think someone doing SS petzl bars would sell a few. Sadly, I no longer have a lathe.

The CMI american jobbies are VERY expensive. To the point that you might as well just buy another rack.

I am going to borrow a colleagues mill in the near future to make some better looking bars than the ones I just drilled and filed.

If you can draw up the cut profile of the Petzl bars, or if someone has some worn out bars I can copy, I could try making some Petzl compatible stainless bars.

Talk to rick, he has a handy guy who could sort it I'm sure.

If not get them over to AC Haines up at estover (next to wrigleys) in plymouth. They will machine you what ever you want. And for small runs theyput you onto the guy running the machine and he will do it for some beer tokens!

I had a m4 screw drilled end on and internally threaded for like 10quid. Also had 6x 316 inserts for my rollcage machined out of solid 316 stainless for 40 quid.... Top guys and really know their stuff

It shouldn't be that difficult to make bars with simple hand tools - all you need are a vice, drill, hacksaw, scribing tool, ruler and a couple of files. Add a Dremel and you're laughing. If you are making a few bars a simple drilling jig would not be beyond the bounds of possibility.

Just bear in mind that stainless is a much worse conductor of heat than aluminium.

Already been discussed in great detail 😉

I'm quite keen on getting a load of bars made up. Like so many things, I will get around to this in due course
