Its difficult to gauge its size from the pic, but I saw something very similar at the weekend which was the central section of an anvil. Very heavy.

Yes, metal, size is about 10cm squarish, on the angled side there is also a round hole.

Something to do with a rail points system? hence the angle on one side

Thats a thought - it could be that, its been a while since I have been down the passage it is down, but it is near a junction split.

Can't recall seeing any points in Nenthead that had a lever type system to move them that would need a counterweight which kinda puts me off the idea.
Looks like a counterweight for something or another though
