Received the following via the North Wales Cave Rescue email list.

Though it worth duplicating here.

Quote:

Two instances have come to light where the top bobbin of a Stop Descender has developed cracks. The bobbin has not failed, and in use the rope tends to produce a compressive force on it so catastrophic failure is unlikely. However, you might like to be check your own Stops just to make sure. Note: The cracks only showed up with the use of a dye disclosing agent.

If you haven't already, that document is quite worth a read. it doesn't sound anything to worry about unduly 🙂

If I recall correctly, the force of the rope causes the crack to be compressed rather than extended when the Stop is under load, so it's safe to use even if it has cracked.

Which is a relief, of sorts... 😮

There may be some benefit from setting up a scheduled inspection of your equipment, even to the extent of occasionally inspecting it with dye penetrant to confirm that it is in good order.
Hello again darkness, my old friend...

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
