Went up above Cwmorthin recently to look at the dried up lake called Llyn Bach. Very overgrown with heather and whin on the lake bed. took photos of the cracks.
A warning : - As well as the large cracks, there are also smaller hidden fissures up there. don't know how deep they are. One was very well concealed with vegetation. I put one leg down this to above my knee and fell over.:stupid: It was very narrow at the top but I could put my arm right down it without obstruction. It appeared very clean and dry, with no mud etc, as if it was draining through quite nicely to somewhere, but was quite invisible due to plant growth.
For a split second I thought I was on my way into Cwmorthin via the cracks, probably to discover an unexplored bit! 😮
I don't really want to go back up there now.
It would be so easy to break/twist an ankle or even break a leg up there.
I wonder if some of these smaller, narrower fissures are quite new, and may even open further. I would have liked to measure this crack, but we didn't have any means to do so. Looked around for a suitable long stick or something like that, but coudn't find anything.
I feel much safer in the mine. At the very least you can usually see where your putting your feet!
(by the way we found it to be quite drippy and damp in Cwmorthin as there had been a fair bit of rain that week)
