I never use the Stop as a braking device, using a Handy braking carabiner for that and just unlock and go. But the Stop handle hurts as it's just a bit of bent sheet with a tiny rubber cover, and holding it fully open on a long shaft is painful.

I use an ID for work, which is a braking descender, and that's much more comfortable, albeit a bit cissy when it comes to descending speed. But it is for work after all. I've often wondered about using it underground but wasn't sure if it would survive Peak District sediments.

I've used ID's underground in a cave rescue context for building z rigs etc. When they work they are fantastic however they do seem very susceptible to mud so, as a rigger, I always like to have a plan B up my sleeve.

That said a mate of mine uses an ID as a descender and swears by it.

Not that I remember bouncing on the rope down Moel Fferna in an effort to get the bloody thing moving. I still have it, but it's safe(r) for noobies to practice on.

On a clean rope however, it's lovely.

Unfortunately many mine explorers and especially clubs favour hard wearing 11mm rope that is often not over clean and gets quite stiff.
Can be quite entertaining for the lighter members of the group! More than once I have seen someone with a death grip on a Stop, bouncing on the rope, with language their mothers would not like.
The rack sailed down!

Anthron descenders are absolutely diabolical, wouldn't touch one with a barge pole.

Interesting about Anthrons - a friend of mine has one and on a descent the other day he was in danger of suspension trauma on a not huge pitch - clean dry rope.
He was moving better on the previous pitch but the rope there was, at the top at least, covered in what seemed to my rack to be Teflon loaded slime - 5 bars and the hyperbar needed!
Don't look so embarrassed, it's a family trait...

A mate of mine using an Anthron had a bit of an issue on a very gritty in situ rope - he simply couldn't move.

That's not the one hanging down a pitch from a higher level. The one like a round file? I think I took about 2mm off my first 3 bars doing that pitch.

Yup - also trashed the aly bars on my Kong micro rack - hence the fact that I now use stainless.

11mm rope, embedded with quartz grains!
Good stuff isn't it. :curse:
(Club ropes I have used!)

There's also the "issue" with an Anthron, especially for someone used to a Stop, that there is a narrow sweet spot for descending between the 2 "stop" positions. Once you find it, it will glide down clean 10.5mm. There's a good chance that Stop users don't have the handle where it needs to be, since they are (or should be) used to squeezing the handle all the way in.
