I just uploaded a number of pictures into the database of the Accident Mine. It is located just south of Las Vegas. Known locally for a nice ore hopper and some outstanding Galena samples. It's a pretty good hike up to the mine on the old miner's trail. It's a hard climb up if you don't know that the miner's trail is there. :-[

Although it's not a physically challenging mine to explore, it has a lot of opportunities for a photographer.

I don't mean to reply to my own post, but some of you might be interested. There is a mining district south of Las Vegas that was worked from the late 1800's to the mid 1900's. I found a book in Google Books that discusses this district in depth with a lot of information about the specific mines I will be posting pictures of as well as the geology of the area. For you "mine nerds", this might suck up a bit of your free time. At least it will for me...

Reading down through the table of contents, it categorizes the mines by the type of mineral produced. You will see how diverse the production was in this small area.

Hi. Some really nice photos there. Kind of exactly what you expect an abandoned American mid-west mine to look like!
Love the name too.... any ideas about the origin of the name?

mine exploring in trainers! no mud! no water! no ochre!

where's the fun in that!:devil:

must be fantastic to be able to wander somewhere in such comfort. I'm not jealous at all, honest!

Can we 'borrow' that winch?

just the job for an endless rope haulage system ;)

We all laugh a bit about the name but I've not heard anything about the origin. Seems like a bit of a jinx for a name.

Most of the mines are dry out where I live. From time to time we come across a flooded mine or one where lower levels have water, but those are the exception.

Being warm and dry makes exploring a lot more fun. Of course, walking out of an adit into 45°C heat is something you guys don't have to deal with. Guess there's never a "perfect" explore, but we get pretty close sometimes.

Maybe this winch would do it for you. It is from the Columbia mine at the south end of Death Valley.

It probably refers to it being discovered "by accident" or something similar.....? As in "a happy accident"?

Accident as in 'unintended find' is a good enough reason for a name to me ... This one needs to be close to the top for a thursday night trip surely? Mr Sinker... Please?. Shorts and sandals here we come. 😎

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
