I find this a very interesting photo but I'm certain I don't understand the hieroglyphics. If anyone could shed some light I would be grateful. "please don't scare the birds" seems to indicate that they had birds flying around in the mine or am i being daft again.

I've seen birds, ships, all manner of things carved into slate chamber walls, usually where somebody would have stood doing a specific job. It's possible this is nothing more than decorative. Or indicating the stock of canaries is behind the door

Its only a guess but..

Canaries are very sensitive to Methane or CO poisoning - hence their use in coal mines. But they are also quite sensitive to shock. If the canary was frightened to death - would this be distinguishable from poisoning? Risk of a false positive?

Would a ventilation door be a good place to keep canaries underground - i.e. would gases accumulate here?

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
