Paul Murton visited the site of the coal mine at Machrihanish and spoke to a couple of former miners. One was working on his own in coalface on New Year's Eve when his lamp failed so he had to crawl out, following the rails!

He also visited Tirfergus which was an unofficial mine worked when the main mine was closed in the Depression. There is an outcrop of coal so he got a souvenir piece to take home.

On: BBC 1 Scotland HD
Date: Monday 15th October 2018 (11 minutes left)
Time: 19:30 to 20:00 (30 minutes long)

Decline and Fall. Series in which Paul Murton takes a tour of Scotland's lochs. In the final episode, he visits Kintyre and encounters a strange and spiritual cave painting on Davaar Island, before sampling spirits of another kind in Campbeltown, famous the world over for whisky. He uncovers the story of the only coal mine in the Highlands and a seam that runs all the way to Ireland. Heading up Loch Fyne, Paul joins the last of the Ring Net fishermen onboard a restored fishing boat heading to Lochgilphead, where he tracks down the inventor of Scotland's lost supercar - the Argyll Turbo. Journey's end is in the middle of Loch Fyne on a remarkable relic of the Ice Age.
