The Mining Heritage Trust of Ireland is planning a field trip to Leadhills in Sept 2015. One of the aims is to compare and contrast the mining heritage with Newtownards and other mines in Co. Down, N. Ireland which have similar geology. I'm looking for help in suggested sites to visit (of I know about the lead mining museum). Is anything accessible underground?

Long way from my bailiwick however as far as I know there is no formal underground access across the Buccleugh estate.

The Buccleuch estate is responsible for the land around Wanlockhead. Leadhills, over the county boundary in Lanarkshire, is owned by Hopetoun estates although the land is leased to the Leadhills estate. All very complicated I know but I don't suppose either estate would be too happy to have people wandering about the moors in the middle of the grouse shooting season. There's quite a lot to see around the area of Wilson's and Glengonnar shafts but a lot of 'landscaping' has taken place over the last few decades. The mineralogy of the area is probably of international importance.

As I understand it, both Estates are against any underground exploration, which is a complete change in attitude from say 12 years ago.
I have been challenged on at least two seperate occasions there, whether that has other implications I know not, but in my opinion I am sure my line of thought is correct
In a public forum like this I will not be drawn any further.
